Question Recommended OS for 8300?

Please Login to Remove!

My wife has had an 8300 on AT&T for about 18 months (she's running the original software 4.2.2.89). Lately she has been getting constant Sim Card Errors where the signal switches to "SOS" and she needs to reboot her phone. She doesn't actually take the battery out and touch the sim card but rather uses the Alt/Shift/Del method and then everything works OK for a little while until she gets the error again.

So I want to upgrade her software. Saw that AT&T has put out 4.5.0.110 so I figure I would upgrade to that but it sounds like some people have been having issues w/ it? She isn't a power user so I just want something stable for the 8300.

I am familiar and comfortable w/ running the software updates so any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

I would just update to the latest you see in the sticky in this forum, if you want to upgrade.

Before updating the OS I would make sure the sim card is locked in properly. If it keeps up have the sim replaced.

The OS isn't likely causing the sim card errors.

I would first recommend that for connection issues such as an SOS she does two things:

1. Swap the SIM card at a ATT retail store. They will do so free.
2. Learn to do the occasional battery pull reboot. For connection issues, that IS recommended.

and finally, 3. at least OS .110, if not the latest in the Sticky Notes.

Thanks. Actually went to AT&T this morning and the guy said he had the exact same problem w/ his 8300 a while ago and swapping the SIM didn't fix it. I specifically asked if the SIM should be swapped. He recommended updating the software.

Actually thought the Alt/Shift/Del was identical to the battery pull?

I guess I will go w/ 110 since it is AT&T supported and relatively recent.

Thanks for the replies.

Well, quite honestly, a SIM swap would be my first choice if it is constant. He is wrong.

A battery pull reboot is not the same as a soft reboot... close and perfect for some occasions. But not identical.

Okay well I started the update process, it started Erasing the applications, then I left the room...came back maybe 10 mins later and Desktop Manager said "A fatal error occurred while updating your software, please try again"...the Curve has a white screen w/ a spinning hourglass. I unplugged and replugged and restarted DM and it didn't do anything.

I have done a number of SW updates on my old Pearl and my Bold and never had anything like this happen.

Please help! My wife is going to kill me if I don't get this working.

Plugged to a rear USB port, not a hub or port?

Just unplug, reboot the PC, reconnect and use "loader.exe" rather than DM, as explained in ALL of the Latest OS Sticky Notes at the top of all of the model forums here.

If still no love, turn to JLCmder on the FAQ site.

Update...after a while of the spinning hourglass, a screen came up saying Blackberry Platform 2.7.90 (I think those were the numbers) and then listed the main applications....address book, calendar, etc....looked like the options menu and in the AT&T theme....but when you clicked on any line item it said "Error w/ so and so module"...

...after about 2 mins of that I got a white screen that says App Error 205 w/ a Reset button.

What should I do?

Did you use "Loader.exe" as all the stickys suggest?

You may need to wipe with JL_Cmder and try again. This time just use Loader.exe. if you have other USB devices plugged in, try unplugging them. Make sure you're not using a hub.

Seriously, the ATT guy was wrong. It's most likely a sim issue, not a software issue. Now you have worse issues.

Yeah...wasn't plugged into a USB por ton the back...will try that out.

What should I do about the App Error 205 first? Should I hit Reset?

Use JL_Cmder to wipe the device.

So I shouldn't even try to use loader.exe....the thing is toast? have to use JL_Cmder...never done it before but heard it is pretty easy.

Thanks for the real time replies.

You can try loader.exe but you may still need JL_Cmder

the 'thing' is not toast.

Hit reset and see what happens... can't be worse than you have now.

Then go to JLCmder as I recommended above.

And get a SIM swap.

By toast I meant that I would need to wipe it.

Hit reset and I got the hourglass for a minute or two and then the same reset error.

Guess I will try JLCmder.

Will go for the new SIM as well...once I get this thing working.

Ok...very weird....so before running JLCmder I just used the loader.exe method. It recognized the device asked me if I wanted to update the software, I clicked the various checkboxes and then I got a message saying the update was successful maybe 2 mins later (seemed way too quick). Then I saw an hour glass on a white for maybe 5 minutes. Was in the process of downloading and installing JLCmder from the FAQ (which didn't seem to work on my Vista Home Premium PC by the way) and all of sudden I get the Run Setup Wizard screen on the Curve and the AT&T theme is clearly there. Checked Options / About and it says I have 4.5.0.110.

So I guess the software is now installed and I jsut need to register and activate the device? I was pretty stupid and didn't do a manual backup before this mess started so I think I am going to have to sync my device and start from scratch...not sure at what point the install crashed and whether it performed a backup.

Should i start DM and see what happens...if it prompts me to restore? Assume I don't need to use JLCmder at htis point since I have software on my device?

Thanks for all the help. Everything seems to be working. Registered so I am getting emails. Synced w/ DM so I have my contacts and calendar appts back. Now I just need to mess around w/ all of the options and icons.

Didn't end up needing JLCmder...which is a good thing b/c it didn't seem to want to install on my PC.

I've done probably 10 updates before between my Pearl and Bold and always used DM and never had a problem....guess Loader.exe is the way to go and I should re-read the instructions thoroughly before doing this.

Thanks again for the quick responses.
