Simple Yes Or No!!
Please Login to Remove!
Could someone help me with a simple question. I'm thinking of getting a BB Bold to handle email when I'm out of the office. For the reason of being too boring I won't go into why I need the BB to do this task, but I would like to know if it is possible to:
Receive an email with an attachment, down load the attachment to the phone, then copy the attachment from the phone to a laptop.
I would then like to do the reverse, upload from the laptop to the blackberry then attach to an email and send it.
I have been to 3 local shops but no one has the answer.
A simple Yes or No will do!
If yes, is there a size limit to the file?
Thanks,
Richard.

Welcome to the forums.
Yes, that is possible.
You can save the attachment to the media card. Once on the media card, turn on Mass Storage Mode and connect the device to your PC. From there you can move the file to the PC, or move files from PC to the card.
When creating an email, press the menu key and select attach file, from there browse to the file you wish to attach.

I need to able to digitally sign Computer generated drawings to release for manufacture. This can only be done by opening the drawing on the laptop, editting it and returning it to the sender.

There is a MB limit on downloading and saving attachments. I am not sure if this is a BES/BIS limit and can be changed or just a network limitation. On my Bold for example, I get an error if the attachment is larger than 3MB.

Why wouldn't you just tether the Blackberry and use it as a modem? Then, you can just send directly from the computer. It would take the same amount of time to go over the network, but involve fewer steps.
If you were just opening the document on the BB, and then sending, and never moving it to/from the laptop, then you'd want to do what you're saying. But if you need to have it on the laptop, then just make the BB your connection to the Internet from the computer, and do everything on the computer...

A simple yes or no is not really adequate to answer your question.
You may not be able to attach ALL file types from the BlackBerry to send from the BlackBerry.
And yes, size does matter.

I have tried using the a phone as an internet connection in the past to save on the hastle of mentioned. Works OK, if a little slow in the UK were my carrier is based - however when I go to mainland Europe it is very inconsistant. On the last trip I noticed the guys with the BB's had no problems receiving mail. Hence we arrived at this question, more of a fail safe than as I appreciate there are better ways to do the task.
I have had the same questions from the shops, you instantly try to sell me the usb sticks for the laptop. I want a phone, mobile email devise & the ability to download email attachments, sign them and forward them on. Which the shops were unable to answer.
Being new to the whole BB thing I had no idea what the capabilities are.
Anyway thanks for helping me out.
File sizes are normally in the 0.5 - 1.0 meg range which reading the replys is not a problem.
One particular customer sends ZIP files with the drawings in - does this cause a problem on a BB?

You should be just fine.
The newer devices with the latest OS will extract zip files.

I get the same error, so I do think 3mb is the limit set on a bb.
So if you have larger attachments you might have a problem.

Does the ability to save attachments to the media card depend on the BES host?
I have a new Bold with 247 on it and I can't save files. Perhaps I am doing something wrong?
This is a bit of a hijack, but perhaps pertinent if the OP buys a phone and has the same problem?

The bold does not come with a transflash external card you must purchase one separately and insert it on the left side of the device in the card reader. Could that be why maybe? Though the device does have like 900 megs on board for saving attachments/and pictures.....
I'm not sure saving of files can be disabled by BES ...I do know camera device can be disabled ....hmm...I may have just dug myself a hole.

I have a 4 GB card in there that I use for pics and music.
I think it has something to do with the version of software on the BES side and the ability to support v4.5 or higher functionality.
For example, I get HTML email from my pop3 personal account, but not my corporate email acct to the BB.
