Default Deployed guy with a 8830 world edition ?

Looks like a great forum for tech info here but the search is kicking my butt... Not a forum newbie usually hangout in Land Rover forums.

I'm deployed to the middle east got a local sim card and pos phone from a guy that was rotating back to the states. So I have a functional local sim card and number. I have a verizon 8830 world edition unlocked. It accepts the sim card imports data from the sim card, however it doesn't seem to be changing the phone number to the local one for over here so it doesn't get the calls I would normally be getting for local numbers. I do however get missed calls hours later from those numbers lol. Being a guy that just uses his 8830 and doesn't mess with it I'm finding is a problem now so...

Do you guys know by chance what settings I need to change or what I need to do to get it working properly over here? I'm going to try and head by the cell phone shop today but don't want to get screwed because I don't know what I'm talking about lol.

Thanks for the help guys in advance, I'm looking forward to using the 8830 again instead of this pos nokia that the keypad is falling off of....

Try going into the manage connections settings and force selection of the GSM network. Try that as opposed to Global. You may need to provision as well.

Tried that no dice, put it back on global shut it down pulled the sim card and let it sit for awhile with the battery out, like 4 or 5 hours had work to do lol. When I came back and put the card back in and powered up it had switched from GSM to GPRS oddly it started working fine. I have no idea what GPRS is but it's receiving and making calls now and working great!

Now to break it again if I can get the new os downloaded....

I believe that GPRS is the data transmission and receipt side of the GSM network. Glad it is working. Stay safe.

Doing my best, and oddly enough the blackberry is quickly becoming a very useful companion on this little world tour. Even if it is 78 cents a minute to call home. It's easier than finding a call center.

Man, I wish I was getting $0.78 calls when I was in Baku.
