Have know this on a support case. Basically, there are two timers that determine when email messages are reconciled between the BlackBerry smartphone and IBM® Lotus Notes®. Both of these timers are optimized for maximum battery life on the BlackBerry smartphone.

The first timer is on the BlackBerry smartphone and it determines when the BlackBerry smartphone reconciles email messages with Lotus Notes using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The BlackBerry smartphone reconciles after approximately 15 minutes of inactivity, when the Messages application is closed, or after 100 changes on the BlackBerry smartphone.

The second timer is on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server will check the mail file for updates approximately every 30 to 60 minutes when the mail file is active. The frequency can grow to approximately every 90 minutes when the mail file is inactive.

Performing Reconcile Now on the BlackBerry smartphone will reconcile the BlackBerry smartphone with Lotus Notes and reset each timer.

Just wanna share a piece of information that I've learnt about these timers. They are necessary to conserve the battery. Imagine a busy BlackBerry actively sync up the read/unread marks, I bet it will not last 1 day.
