Call the carrier and see if they will give you an unlock code. If not, you will need to purchase one. I recommend horizonwirelessonline. They are one of our sponsors and can help.

EDGE means you are connected to the network, but not to 3G. Your average data speed on EDGE is 50-125 kbps, only slightly faster than dial up. OK for email, slow for web related activities.

Not sure what you mean by "get all the at stuff out of phone'. You can't delete or change the att splash screen as that is coded into the firmware.

The 8900 operates on the following frencies: GSM/GPRS 850 / 900 / 1900 / 1800 MHz | EDGE. It does not have 3G capability.

As for working in Central America, if the device is unlocked and your carrier is GSM, just insert their SIM and it should work. You might have to adjust the settings however. And as always for Internet and email, you will need a BB data plan. If the carrier doesn't support the BB, then it will be difficult to make it work on a generic data plan and you would not be able to get email at all.

no you dont need 3G to get email.
You need a Blackberry Data plan.
