3 hours from 10% to 60%. The same port charges 8310 to full in less than 1 hour.

Does 9700 need special driver?

Thanks!

Plugged in to the PC, are you connected via a HUB or straight in to a USB port? Do you have Desktop Manager installed?

One would generally get a faster charge by plugging into a wall outlet.

Are there apps running in the background? Are you in a 3G fringe zone? All use more power.

Directly into USB port.

DM is installed.

WiFi is off

3G on with full bar of singal strength

No USB app running -- again 8310 charges fine.

I know the charger is faster but I don't always have it around.

Does DM recognize your BB?

Reason being: If there is no driver for an attached USB device, the computer will supply a lower rated current to the device. If the device has drivers installed, then it will raise the current limit.

Possible?

It's DM 5.01. It shows Active device BlackBerry 9700. Is this enough?

Does the device manager have to be running? I don't recall that for 8310.

Thanks!

Yea, that's fine, the drivers loaded. So that's not the problem.

1100mah for 83xx batteries
1550mah for 9000/9700 batteries

60% of 1550mah is 930mah...which is almost full charge on 8300s

USB ports also only have a maximum of 5v i believe...which will cause it to charge slower.

Plug it into the wall if you want it to charge reasonably quickly...a USB port on a computer or laptop has a limited amount of voltage.

There is nothing wrong with your phone.

Both USB's and the RIM AC charger provide 5 V. Exactly the same.

What changes is the current limit for each one.

My RIM AC charger is rated at 700 mA. That's not what the phone will draw, but that is the maximum the charger can provide before something happens (charger shutdown [likely], or diminished voltage [unlikely]). If I had to guess, the phone would draw a maximum of 500-600 mA during it's charging cycle to be on the safe side.

USB ports are a bit different in that they can change the amount of current available depending on several factors such as whether or not the device has a driver attached to it and what the driver set's as a current limit.

Maximum USB current is 500 mA, but can be 100 mA given some situations (as detailed above).

There are other variables in regards to charging such as charging profiles (different charging rates over a single charging cycle).

Hope this helps.

I have the latest driver so there should be no issue in terms of limit set by the driver.

There has to be sth else. The question is whether we can tweak anything to make a difference?

I am having the same problem via the USB charger. I charged my phone while sleeping on my computer and woke up 6 hours later and it was not fully charged. My former 8310 charges up in 1 hour max. Glad I saw this post, I was about to post the same question. Via my cradle and wall charger it charges much faster.

In related news, I have an outlet strip with two usb charging ports on it. The USB ports charged my 8900 just fine, but when I plug my 9700 into one of the ports, the berry tells me that it's not getting enough current and to plug into the wall charger. Apparently the 9700 needs a higher charge current.
