New 3G Network: Is the 8700C Compatible
Please Login to Remove!
I'm trying to find out for sure if the 8700C is going to be compatible via firmware upgrade with the new 3G network that's already been released in a few markets.
I've heard both things -- that it's not (only new phones will get it), and that it will (that the hardware is there but just needs to be enabled via firmware).
Any information you guys have on this one way or another would be appreciated.

You've already gotten UMTS on an 8700? How did you do that?
Thanks for your Help.

So what everyone is trying to say is no, the 8700 is "2G" at this moment. The only BB's as of right now that would technically be "3G" would be the 7250 and 7130e for VZW, since EVDO is 3G for CDMA, however it does not have EVDO Rev. 1 for voice at this time so it is not completly 3G (that will allow voice and data at the same time).

actually, most of the 8700c are edge which are technically 2.75G
1G= analog
2G= TDMA
2.5G= GSM/GPRS
2.75= GSM/Edge
3G=UMTS

I have a really good freind at the cingular store, and he hooked me up as soon as I got the 8700, It's backwards compatible with Edge.

So, are you saying that your 8700 is 3G compatible and will work with the 3G networks when they are rolled out (everyone else in the world seems to think no - in spite of your friend at the Cingular store).

The 8700 does not support UMTS. My guess is it won't in the future either. Unless RIM makes a whole new unit.

It may be possible
At the launch events, Intel and RIM confirmed that the chipset will support UMTS, and it will depend on whether RIM provides a flash for the device to upgrade the firmware to so.

And BlackBerry Connect is just around the corner
Possible - yes; today - I don't think so. Even with a friend.

The device will, The firmware wont.
My phone is showing EDGE just like normal, and have the same OS as everyone else, I have a 3G sim card in my phone, as thats what I thought we were talking about, Sorry for the misunderstanding, but I have a 3G sim card, and it works

Well...RIM has done it at least once! Check the 7250 and EV-DO. It took awhile after the product was released before it became available and much like the 8700, RIM was saying the device would be capable of EVDO as the chip set supported it but that it would require a firmware upgrade. I think the 8700 is much the same. Of course, by the time it happens RIM may have released a newer snazier handset that was designed exclusively for 3G and people will forget about it as an issue (except, of course, for the 8700 owners).
