It seems it takes 5 minutes or so to get my email on my 8530 curve. Is there a setting somewhere to "check for email" sooner?

AFAIK, email reconsiliation is every 3 minutes, and I don't think you can speed it up ( I don't really see that as such of a big deal anyways...).

Nope.
BIS polls the email server (depending on provider) every 15 minutes.
There is no setting to make this any quicker.
