there is a seller who is selling refurbished phones, blackberries. is it ok to buy these? he says they are in unopened boxes, so does it mean that they are guaranteed to work?

The only guarantees are those the seller provides, and those guarantees are only as good as the seller's word. If they're refurbished then how are the boxes unopened? Unless the seller means his own boxes he used after refurbishing the units, or unless these are directly from RIM after being factory-refurbished, it sounds a little fugazey to me.

the phone is unlocked, but the description is "blackberry 8820 vodaphone" . what does that mean?

Not sure anyone other than the seller would now what their description means but the following Wikipedia article talks about "Vodafone". Notice the difference in spelling.
