Default OS 6 vs OS 7.1

Please Login to Remove!

I am planning to buy a new BB (this will be my first one).

As far as internet services are concerned my main priority is instant msging and NOT web browsing.

Attributes that matter to me the most are-

1. Awesome keyboard (which is much better in the Bold series)
2. Long battery life (since i am a chat freak i need it to keep itself alive atleast for 1 day)

As of now, the newest phones in the Bold series which operate on OS7.1 (9900, 9790) are touch n type phones but i dont want a touchscreen phone. Also they are beyond my budget (20K INR)

The phones boasting OS 7.1 in the Curve family are either low end phones (9220, 9320) or have a poor battery life (9360). And ofcourse the Curve family is best known for its clicky keyboard which i didnt like much.

So i came down to the best possible option i have i.e. BB Bold 9780 (as per my assessment)

I am also aware of the fact that i wont be able to upgrade my OS6 to OS 7 or higher (though there is a marginal difference between the two OSs). Is that an issue to be worried about?

Am i thinking along the right tangent? Pls advice.
Apart from that pls share your experience with BB 9780 as i am quite inclined towards buying it.

PS i am not interested in the Torch series.

The 9790 is not touch, and it is the one you should buy.

The 9790 is a touchscreen model.

It is? I thought only the 9900 was in that style of device. No carrier sells the 9790 here in the US, so I had no idea.

At first I thought pretty much the same thing, expecting it to be like a 9360 or something. It's a really nice device imo. OP would probably be better off with a 9360 or another Curve-type model.

9810 is both touch and full standard keyboard.

But the OP doesn't want a Torch.

Doesn't leave the OP with much choice then.

Either one of the 93xx series, or a 2g model (x230)* not sure of the model number.

I recon that i don't have many options here. So i could have even gone for the Bold 9790 but after reading the existing user reviews regarding its poor battery i am now reluctant.

They say that though 9790s battery is better than that of 9900 but it still sucks. Hardly manages to stay alive for 8-9 hours with moderate use.

I'm not sure how true the reviews are but thats like a lotta money to invest when u are not even sure about its performance.

Looks like it may b e a 9360 for you then. Maybe the 9320? Either one of those are pretty cheap compared to the 9900.

Pls understand that money is not the issue here.

I'm looking for a better hardware (esp its keyboard) which the Bold family provides but the battery is too poor for smartphones like 9900/9790 (even Curve 9360s battery sucks big time - just 1000 mAh)

As for the Curve series 9320/9220 are low end phones which didnt impress me much moslty bcoz of its low end specs.

Thats why i came down to another option which is OS 6 powered BB 9780..

Is this a good option to pick??

I had, and continue to have 0 problems with my 9780. I keep one around as my backup.

To be fair though, the 9360 does last a whole day. Lasts longer than my 9900. But the best battery performer would still be the 9780.

I have started to have this feeling that 9780 is best for me as it suits my requirements.

But the one thing that concerns me here is it has an internal memory of just 256 mb whereas the newer versions are equipped with 512 mb.

And as i can't use the SD card for anything except for storing my media files, is 256 mb enough for running the OS 6 as well as the applications??

It was for me. I had about 40+ apps installed on my device.

I didn't have any issues. Well, ones that were not caused by me

Remember, battery life depends on how much you use the device. What another person gets isn't an indicator of the life you will see.

Never let a lithium battery get below 20% on a regular basis or you will damage the battery and shorten its life. I find it works better to keep topped off when near a power source.

Can anyone out here give me 3 details about Bold 9780 correctly?

1. How much is the internal memory/ROM?

2. How much is its RAM?

3. Whats the speed of its processor?

I am sorry to have asked a question about the specs but none on the sites have clearly mentioned this data.

I have checked the specs on this particular site already. It says that 9780s internal memory is 256 mb whereas many forums and reviews say that its 512 mb.

I know that its RAM is 512 mb but not sure about the ROM/internal memory. And most of the sites fail to mention both the specs.

Pls clarify as such things can be misleading.
