Don't feel bad. I don't know what it is either. I can only guess that it is for communicating with people from your blackberry to a person using their computer as a phone? i have no idea.

Hearing People <sigh>...

Relay Services are for Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing or Speech-disabled users. The Blackberry is not just a fancy phone/PDA. It's perfect for those of us who would use text/data-only for comminicating with others.

Hearing People can use their phone to call another hearing person. Deaf people use Relay to call hearing people. Now, instead of being at our TTY phone or PC, we can go wireless too.

Hearing people can dial 711 on their phone (in most states), give the Caller Assistant (CA) the TTY phone number or AIM screenname of a Deaf user and they relay the call for you.

Hope this helps!

Steve

I havent come across i711 before but will give it a try. The big difference between this and ip-relay I would say is the benefit that ip-relay gives you a regular phone number in your area code for others to call you.

I'm not sure how new this service is but I would think they might come out with that sooner or later also.

For all of you that do not like to do OTA or like to have a copy of the software on your machine like me, here is the link for the desktop installation.

Can anyone give me the full URL to the .jad file for i711 -- I'd like to test it out on my Rogers 8700r device, although I know I would only be able to call U.S. phone numbers with this client.

To do so, go to www.i711.com/bb on your U.S. blackberry, select the download link, and then select "Link Address". This will tell me the full path to the .jad file.

Also, eventually I hope to convince Bell Canada to let me deploy/commercialize my www.minitty.com solution for Canadian Bell Canada Relay. As it stands now, I am one of the only people in Canada using an IP-based shell on Bell Canada Relay Service over my BlackBerry, rather than using a TTY.

I dumped the i711 app.

I prefer to leave my BlackBerry on 24/7 and charge every other night on my nightstand. i711 drains my battery in one day and it's not even connected to their service (it stays on in background).

Looking the options screen in the app, it looks like it has the ability to "call" you, but no tutorial/help screens to confirm. It also says it can use your existing addressbook, but I could get it to select anything outside the app. If I added a phone number, it gave me the opportunity to save it to the addressbook, which it did. It also had an extra field for TTY phone numbers in addressbook.

I'm gonna talk with Hamilton Relay reps about your MiniTTY. They are interested in doing "something" for wireless relay services.

I still would like to have a full-featured TTY app or built-in for the BlackBerry or any QWERTY cellphone. Using voice plans to call other TTY users (wireless or landlines).

Then someday, wireless videophones like my videophone at home.

Steve
