Is my 8700 dead?
Please Login to Remove!
Yesterday, I plugged it into the home charger, the screen went blank, red light flashed, and then a big battery symbol with a red line appeared in the middle of the screen. The background of the screen remains lit in BRIGHT white with the symbol on the whole time. Does anyone know anything about this or do I need to call cingular for a new 8700C?

Same. I unplugged it, popped the battery our multiple times, Kept the battery, out sim card out for a few minutes, put it all back together and it does the same things. I even charged it overnight and did everything again and its still the same thing. Whats worse is the phone is only 50 days old and cingular is telling me I cant get a "warranty exchange" unit until Monday. I asked for their 30 day return policy to be extended and they are telling me no. Im out of contract and verizon seems to be calling my name.....

No text on the symbol. Just went to the cingular store. They said it is an "invalid battery" indicator. They got my phone to boot up finally, however the second the phone was plugged into the charger the invalid battery indicator popped up again. I switched batteries and it still does the same thing. Then I switched batteries with a friend's 8700. The phone showed the same "invalid battery"indicator. WHen I gave hte battery back to him, his phone does it too. It seems that my phone not only has a bad battery, it destroys batteries too. Cingulars warranty exchange doesnt seem to have a solution for replacing both the phone wiht both a battery. Their warranty exchange only replaces the phone. Time to switch carriers.

Did you buy it with a credit card?
If you bought your 8700 with a credit card, see if you can get anything out of the purchase protection dept. of the cc that you used.

Well heres the deal. Got a supervisor from Cingular's warranty exchange dept on the phone and one from their Customer Service Dept on the phone. Even together all they could come up wiht was getting me a refurbished phone by tomorrow....thing is, that doesnt include a battery. None of the local Houston Cingular stores have any batteries in stock, so they suggested me buying a whole phone, using a battery from that and returning that when I get the warranty exchange unit in and then exchanging my dead battery for a new battery when the store gets batteries in stock. Its a lot of trouble...kinda makes me want to go try the motorola Q.

Call a local T-Mobile store. They might have one. Their model uses the same battery.
