Hi,

We've recently installed a new BES running 4.1 and want to move users across from 4.0.1 and retire the old server.

Our provider and RIM have advised that we need to wipe each device before adding them to the new BES. Whilst this is only 20 devices, it is not ideal as a lot of settings and Bluetooth pairings will be lost.

One suggestion has been to remove the encryption associated with the old BES and apply from the new BES. I've removed the user from the old BES but can't work out how to apply the new encryption.

Anyone had a similar experience and can point to the easiest way of doing the transfer?

My sould like too much work but,if you can upgrade the existing server to 4.1 and then you could do a cutover to the new server.

That way you would not lose anything and have close to zero downtime.

if you are moving them from one isolated BES to another isolated BES, then you will have to do exactly as RIM suggested - wipe the devices. this is why in-place upgrades or knife-edge cutovers/migrations are suggested and preferred.

OK, just glad it is only 20 users although this is not without its problems as the backup/restore does not record user settings (fonts) and pairing with Bluetooth devices.

I've also had a device die following a wipe so I'm going backwards rather than forwards.

Try this:Its a 2 fold process.


Part -1 -Consolidate databases (works best with both server with same version atleast destinatin server higher version)

Export the user list from the BES 4.0
Backup database
Point the BES 4.0 Database to the BES 4.1 Database

BES 4.0 will be added to the BES 4.1 database

Use the SQL Enterprise Manger to verify that the serverconfig table got updated with the BES4.0 server info

Now you will lose all users on the 4.0 Manger console,however no worries:Import the BES 4.0 userlist- users should not turn runnning right away

Part-2 - The sourceless move

Now open the Blackberry Manager Console for the 4.1 server
You should see both the servers
Right click on the BES 4.0 and say move user
Move it the other server

When you move the user - Wireless Enterprise Activation will automatcally kick in for this..user... and the services will switch.

Move them all ,if 1st user was successful

In theory, it should work, but I believe you need to be using sql db's. I have doubts it will work with MSDE. I did something simular when I built my 4.1 server on new hardware. I moved the DB from MSDE to SQL on the old one and then connected the new server to the old DB. I can't remember if I still had to wipe/re-activate everyone - I had less than 10 users at the time. I kind of think I still did have to though.
