Default over sensitive water indicator?

Please Login to Remove!

it looks like the water indicator on my new (3 weeks old) BB 8700 has already turned - despite the fact that i have NOT used my BB in the rain, dropped it in water, etc. The only thing I could think of would be going in and out of ice rinks - which would be a fairly substantial temperature change......BUT, it would be less of a temp change than coming inside from a winter day....after all, i do live in WI. are these indicators a bit overly sensitive - this seems lame to me.

Default water indicator

Both my roomate and I have come across this and only thing we can figure is humidity or I have found many people like to have there phones in the bathroom while they shower the steam increases humidity enough to activate sensor same concept for an Ice rink. of course this is all speculation but only thing we have been able to figure it to be

yeah, it's all i can figure too...being in the midwest, we're prone to humid days and cold weather...so i guess the temperature change can cause condensation (which could/would activate the sensor)...what's weird about it to me is that none of my other phones triggered the sensor, and i've brought ALL my phones into the ice rink with me...hopefully this doesn't come back to bite us!

There are a couple people on the forum who have had a problem with their indicator when mowing the lawn. Their indicator tripped just from the sweat in their pocket.

All situation for which will change the "dampness" indicator isa situation you do not want to expose the device to.

The moisture indicatur simply shows that the device was in an area (pocket, skate rink, toilet, bathroom sink)which exposes the device to something which is potentially damaging to the internal workings.

We know what it's suppose to do. We're just wondering if it's a little over-sensitive in favor of the service provider.

right - i fully agree, however being in the midwest, walking from my car to a building in winter could cause condensation because of the temperature change....i'm not saying it's good for the device, but it's an everyday use...and my personal opinion is that it shouldn't be enough to trigger the sensor...being that RIM is a Canadian company, I would think that this would be something that is taken into account (as winters in Canada are typically much colder than here)

Interesting. I'm in Houston and we're definitely humid. Both of my 8700c's indicators are still white. One 8700c has been around since Cingular's initial release of the 8700c. The other is about two weeks old.

I'm in Houston as well. The small indicator on my 8700c is still white however on the battery (near the connectors) I have an indicator that has red "X" across it. I wonder if it is a moisture indicator as well?

My baby hasn't even come close to water!

I think the red x just trips if there is a voltage surge. If it's still an X, you're all set.

On my battery, the small rectangular sticker has four "x"s on it. Is that supposed to change to something in the event of a voltage spike?

The moisture sticker turned on me this weekend. My 8700g hasn't seen water. What gives?

my sentiments exactly :-\

steps to prevent water indicator from changing:

1) Only buy your BB on a warm (not hot) DRY spring day
2) Never take your BB outside your house or office - the temperature change may cause condensation that triggers the indicator
3) Closely monitor the humidity level in the room you store your BB
4) If it's raining outside, run a dehumidifier in your BB storage room
5) Don't ever use the BB if you're sweating (I would recommend keeping your new BB storage room at about 62 degrees Fahrenheit - this way you won't be prone to sweating.

ok...sorry - had to say that

The easiest way to fix it is to apply a small piece of 3M Satin Tape (make sure you use this brand, as it is the only one that is non-porous enough to stop the sensor but also easy enough to remove so as not to raise any suspicions when you go to turn it in) to the sensor.

If you actually do get your phone wet enough to cause water damage the tape won't stop it but it will stop it from tripping in huimidity or sweat or because you looked at it cross-eyed.

i would raise hell if they told me the phone has been in water when its not. im sure they would make exception though, you just have to be polite and assertive at the same time. dont be an ass, but stand your ground and talk about the other carriers a lot.

My indicator turned this weekend when it had not been in water whatsoever. It then about a day later would no longer boot up and Verizon is saying that I got it wet which is not the case. I then tried to put in a claim with the insurance company and they are out of 8703. Be careful. I treat my blackberry like gold and becuase of the sensor I am out my blackberry.

You can be polite or mean if the indicator indicates water then the MFG will not cover it and the carrier is not going to eat the tab.

If you are going to move the lawn, take your phone out of your pocket. The president will have to call you later!
