It definitely needs to use the gold contacts on the back for charging. This way you can just set it in the cradle and not have to plug any cables in. And the contacts need to be long enough to account for a skin on the 8100.

I don't know much about cradles. But I would be interested. Just wondering how it will look like...

I believe someone wished that you could slide the Pearl from the side (Like the one you have for the 8700g)

Also, someone else wished that there was an audio output so that the Pearl could play music while charging in the cradle.

That's all I can think of. Hope that helps.

That sounds like a good idea as long as it will work for charging and syncing without having to hookup any additional cables.

2nd the opinion that it needs to utilize the gold contacts on the back. I don't want to have to **** around with any cables. I would be extremely interested if that design made production.

I recently purchased this cradle: SEIDIO'S RIM BLACKBERRY USB DESKTOP CRADLE - *BD2-CRDSIBBX1-BK too bad it doesn't utilize the contacts but if there was one made for the 8100 that utilized the contacts I would purchase one. I am sure many people would.

I would be interesten in one for sure! Not having to plug in a cable would be awsome! The idea with a speaker and Pearl playing music (like ipod) is cool too, but not really a must. I agree that the contacts need to be long for the charger... many people do have a skin or something of that sort on their phones!

So it's been determined that the two gold portions by the cover release on the rear of the Pearl are indeed contacts? Good. I hoped they would be, but wasn't sure considering that we haven't seen anything at all from RIM that uses them.

i would love to see a good desktop cradle. I would also like to see one that has a spare battery charging option as well.

While you are at it seidio.

Get to work on a car cradle again using the contacts.

But also add a port to charge a GPS puck. And an external speaker.

This way if ever a 3rd party GPS software is available we have a single piece solution.

I would love this...especially if it was a drop in cradle that would allow syncing and charging. This one of the smaller features that I miss from my palm--a good cradle that doubles as a stand and charger when I'm working at my desk. Do we know that the gold contacts can do syncing?

I'm not sure that there is any way to get around having to plug in any BlackBerry. The contacts on the back of the 8100 might be for charging, but they certainly aren't for syncing. The only way to do that would be through USB or Bluetooth, right?

I don't know how much work it would be, but here is what I'd like to see.

Like on my Dell Axim PDA [which I have not used in two years, so don't flame me], it has a port to connect a power adapter and another port to connect the USB connection to the PC.

I would NOT be interested in a cradle that only hooks up the USB connection to the PC.

So I'd like to see a cradle with two USB ports, one for the Pearl Power adapter and one for the USB to PC. Seems the USB port to power adapter could be wired to the mount so the Pearl's gold contacts can connect for charging.

As to being able to connect so the Pearl could play like those iPod cradles, I don't see how that could be done since those contacts don't do anything in terms of connection except for charging [I think].

If I wanted to play music with my 200 watt PC powered speakers, all I would while the Pearl is in the cradle is hook up a male to male 3.5mm audio cable, running from the Pearl to the speaker port. [Of course, I'd have to use my Seidio 3.5 to 2.5 mm adapter on the Pearl].

Here is my Dell Axim cradle about which I speak.

On reflection, a nice touch on these things is the ability to charge a spare battery at the same time the phone battery is being charged.

Before Smartphones got small, I used cell phones and separate PDA's. Also tried the then-huge PDA/Phone combo devices [Toshiba, Samsung].

After I bought this Dell, the 7100t came out and I stopped using the Dell PDA. Now it is a dust collector. I was keeping it around as a media player, e.g., movies and MP3, but now even that is out with the Pearl doing those things well.

But as PDA's go, this X50v was excellent. A mini computer. Warning, Dell got out of the PDA business. They came out with one model after this, but have since stopped production in early 2005. The Pearl type phones have killed the PDA market.
