Cool 8800 or 8900 Tether

Please Login to Remove!

I've read a lot of facts here on these two "Potential" Models but I don't belive that anything has been mention about wrather or not you can tether the phone as a modem.

I don't know if anyone else works as I but I use my BB for data only because I use it to access the Internet from my Laptop in the field and need to talk on the phone at the same time which no device to my knowlage will allow as of yet.

But Ah Yes I am an Email addict!

If you are using the BB for modem purposes only, I think there is a better solution. A card the you slip into your PCMCIA slot. It would be faster than teathering a BB to your laptop.

Have you looked at WLAN?

If you want a modem, the Verizon 8703 is the only choice IMO. EVDO in modem capacity is much better than EDGE. EDGE is fine for emails but not really for surfing IMO.

It is my understanding that you will not need to tether the 8800 to your PC. It will be able to transmit data over bluetooth.

That's partially up to the carrier, for one thing.

Actually I just gave up my AirCard for a 7250.
1 For the messaging and Email
2 The Tethered Modem is faster than the AirCard (personal tests and opinion)
3 The Thethered Modem allways has more bars than the AirCard ever did (again by personal experience.

If you are interested the AirCard is on eBay for a great price.

With 3G you can use data and phone at the same time (Cingular HSDPA, not Verizon EVDO but that may have changed with Rev 1). I agree with Stinstonddog that if tethering was something used often, Verizon's EVDO BB is the best bet. Swapping SIMs is a pain everytime you want to use your laptop.

If you care about following the TOS you agree to, you'll need to buy the tethering plan for the BB ~$75/month that includes both BES Blackberry unlimited service and unlimited tethering. The TOS doesn't allow you to put the SIM in a 3G card (or any other device) so you're stuck with EDGE speed to tether.

3G tether over bluetooth is limited by the bluetooth connection unless your device and laptop supports bluetooth 2.0. Better have extra batteries for that too. 3G is very nice. I use it and find the speed to be better than stated, I'm usually between 700k-1m. Latency is high (200-250ms ping times) so I wouldn't use it with VoIP. I'm looking forward to later this year as Sprint rolls out WiMax and T-Mobile bring in UTMS hopefully we'll see prices come down to reasonable levels.

Regards-Michael G.

I've read in other pages that people have tethered with thier 8800 on Cingular. Is it the same steps as tethering the 8700C??
