The blackberry 7520 does not have text messaging, none of the nextel blackberrys can text message, there is a work around for it and that is to send a email ie.... [email address] and it will get to the other phone as a text message but they have to reply and store ur bberry email adress in there phone cause when they want to send you one they need to send it to your email adress not phone number....note....not call carriers except the teleflip system either, i know for a fact uscellular does not here in chicago so your going to have to try it out in your area with your friends

From what I understand you can receive text messages/SMS on the Nextel 7520 but you can't send. Someone please pipe in if I'm wrong?

That is true. The 7520 can receive SMS text messages but can not send. I believe it was a security measure after what happened in Europe.

You can send text messages to other Nextel subscribers by adding .messaging.nextel.com to there 10 digit phone number. Haven't tried it with any other carriers.

izbryte, I'm not sure for Nextel but in Canada we have TELUS that offers a similar iDEN service and we can't send SMS directly from our phones/Blackberries either (MOSMS) but we can receive fine. To send, we need to launch the wireless web and access TELUS' wap SMS portal... So I guess if you launch your wap (text-based, non-HTML) browser and browse the menu, you should find a way to send text messages... Or else call customer service at 611 from your Blackberry.

With Nextel, you have to sign up for a Text Messaging plan in order to send/initiate text/SMS messages.

and..

Do Nextel SMS subscribers have the ability to receive inter-carrier messages?

Yes. Nextel SMS subscribers can receive inter-carrier messages; however, they do not have the ability to respond to a message. If you are an SMS subscriber and would like the ability to initiate and respond to inter-carrier messages, consider upgrading your messaging service to Text Messaging.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7520/4.0.0 UP.Browser/5.0.3.3 UP.Link/5.1.2.12)

Yes Nextel does offer a SMS service for their customers, but I believe that you cannot use it with BB's due to software limitations designed into the Nextel models

Nextel CSR specifically told me that is was OK to add any of their service plans outside the services unique to the Blackberry which I find was not true. The 7520 as well as the 7510 can only use the service plans unique to the Blackberry which is only two options: The Blackberry 3MB data or their Blackberry unlimited data plan.

Nextel customer service rep needs to update their internal knowledge base since it was I was grossly misinformed dozens of times when shopping for the 7510. Thanks to this forum, I was able to get the info I needed. those slackers.....

I don't recall correctly but I believe in Europe as it is in Japan, you can buy items with prepaid credit from your cell phone and I believe that is the vehicle they used to channel money from people.

I have to give these guys major props. Wired magazine did a great article on that a few months back.

I was told by Verizon that the Blackberries do support the two-way text message. http://www.vtext.com/customer_site/j...y_handsets.jsp

7520 do allow you to recieve and send text messages but you can not simply reply to a text message you have to send them out like email. Because BB7520 have email capability there are unable to two text message at this time. you can either compose email and put the number you are text messeging [email address] or you can go to freesms.1888usa.com and get the actuall message ext.

OK I known what your're talking about now... I read the article in Wired. In Europe and in Japan they use SMS extensively and they can do all kinds of things like paying for parking, at vending machines, etc.

However BT is protected and cripled on most Blackberry devices so I don't think it really matters. Besides, you can send/receive SMS as much as you want with CDMA models... I guess it has to do more with Nextel's plolicies and/or network limitations...

chifire23 is correct, I'm also in the Chicago area. Wassup jo?

I use the following chart 2 send messages 2 people on other carriers. I saved this to my 7520 Nextel and then I cut and paste as needed for new contacts. Don't be afraid to ask what carrier a person is with, they will understand when u explain that its 4 messaging. The chart is not complete so feel free to add to it. 1- Love

Chi-Town Here too.

Yeah, it is complicated with nextel. Probably a little more confusing to the person on the receiving end of your message. They dont know where its coming from (email, sms whatever) and dont know about storing that bulky name into their phone.
