Default New Owner -- How Long to Get My Service?

Please Login to Remove!

I just purchased an 8100 from a local T-Mobile store. The sales guy said I would be able to make calls immediately (I can not) and browse immediately (I can not) but that it would take about 24 hours to transfer my phone number from my last provider (Virgin Mobile.) Once the number was transfered, then I could also receive calls.

So, I am in limbo -- no calling, no browser menu item, no email menu items, no phone book, etc. (Those become available after I register w/ T-Mobile right?)

Unfortunately, I'm leaving on a business trip and don't want to carry 2 cell phones. (In the event the old phone becomes inactive mid-trip.)

What's the typical wait time before T-Mobile allows registration of a transfered number? (I've read both: 24-72 hours, and 3-7 days on their website in different places.)

I guess if it happens, it happens, and if it doesn't, it doesn't. Oh well.

This is a great resource btw, and am glad I found it.

Yes it can but in my experience since WNP wireless number portabilitywas instituted it seldom takes more than a few hours. When dealing with a prepay provider such as Virgin it can take a bit longer. I would think that by Morning you should be fine.

When first instituted it took a few days now generally only a few hours unless there is some technical difficulty. Acct# entered wrong or SSN and the billing addresses should match or they will have to do a lengthier verification so as to not port the wrong number

40 hours WOW!!!! I am guessing they are having a problem getting the number from Virgin. Try calling TMO and ask for Port support

Default Switching from: Virgin Mobile

the guys at the local store called up the transfer dept and were told that they need my "vkey" (i.e. my virgin mobile account password.) And said that w/ that, it should only take a couple of hours. Glad I called.

I know when I ported from VZW to Cingular they needed my VZW account # so that makes sense.
