Has anyone used the 8800's GPS overseas?

I use the GPS with TeleNav in the states and it works very well. I had a call with TeleNav to enquire about service in the UK and other areas of Northern Europe and received a response that the BB GPS firmware does not support use overseas.

This seems strange to me. Does anyone know if this is in fact a limitation in the BB's GPS firmware or if maybe I need some service provider other then TeleNav?

If GPS works in the US it will work anywhere in the world. I mean, if the GPS receiver can lock onto a satellite here there's no reason why it can't lock onto a satellite anywhere else.

Map coverage is determined by the particular GPS app that you're using.

GPS reception works in Europe...problem is the application. Telenav for 8800 currently does not support EU maps. v4.8 only supports Pearl at this time....update for 8800 is supposedly coming.

Not true at all...8800 has a version that supports Europe and US...

As I said above, worked fine for me in two countries. Just have to ignore the initial error on reboots...no biggie.

Map coverage here in the netherlands is OK on 8800. GPS works fine, but app is useless.
-Real navigating is problem. As in When I select a destination to go to it says it can't find a street to start from when I am actually in a street that excist on the map!!
-Searching for addresses is a pain, I still have not figured out how to fill the search fields to get it goiing properly.

But tracking where I am at the moment is no trouble.
Nav4all does a better job but is not able to start the GPs on it's own. so turn on GPS in BBmaps and go for the www.nav4all.com/install program.

Hi !

had a unlocked Cingular 8800 from US to Denmark. Installed BBmaps and ran no errors - map on Denmark working just fine and fast - Will test in Sweden later this month - but do not expect any problems

May add that the 8800 have not yet been released in Denmark.

it's a great app with no monthly fees.
i have the us version. how do i get it to work in Europe?

I´m using a german t-mobile 8800 and do not have any problems running either wayfinder, nav4all and BBMaps, all have nice Maps

GPS works great in Germany with the 8800.
Here is a link to an avi (DivX 4.2 encoded) video I took from my BlackBerry running Maps while driving around in my home town.
Even the speed is almost exact.

(The video is highly compressed to reduce the file size. The occasionally "blanks" are due to the high cpu load on the BlackBerry while displaying maps, downloading data and the screenshots)

I found the application Spot at this article BlackBerry and GPS.

It works fine for me as I do not need "real" navigation. They have a worldwide coverage e.g. at satellite maps and you can even integrate your own maps. It still has some bugs but since version 1.4.1 (which has been released in march I think) the usability improved a lot. A free demo version is also available
