Default Database Consistency Service

Can anyone explain what this service does, and any reasons why someone would disable it?

The service was used in the v3.6 days in order to keep the PIN-Email mapping table up-to-date. Back then the MSDE database was only used for the Mobile Data Service, the table mentioned is used to facilitate MDS pushes (so that the MDS can resolve an email address to the appropriate PIN number).

Since v4.0 even the user configuration is stored in the MSDE database hence there is no need for the service other than if you are running a mixed environment (i.e. v3.6 and v4.x).

Ah! So that explains why the Vodafone engineer who installed our system left it disabled.

I think I'll leave it disabled.

Many thanks!

So this service has roles in 3.x, 4.0, and 4.1 ... if the only MDS function you perform is using the BlackBerry Browser then you really don't need to be concerned ... but read more if you'd like:

3.x

Makes sure that user information stored in the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management database is consistent with information contained in user mailboxes. This service is required by the BlackBerry Mobile Data Service Push Server.

4.0

Provides secure access to online content and applications contained on a corporate intranet, or on the Internet, through the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

4.1

Synchronizes data between the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management database and user mailboxes. This service is required by the BlackBerry Mobile Data System (BlackBerry MDS) Services Push Server.
