True Push E-mail?
Please Login to Remove!
I went through the BB setup wizard on my new 8830 and believe it made me make a BB messenger account than it had me enter my current email which is a gmail account.
Now am I receiving TRUE push mail? I was just reading the FAQ and if I read it correctly I can only get the true push mail if I make a new email with the blackberry carrier address?
I'm very confused, please inform me.
Thanks, Jared

PUSH email comes ONLY when you are connected to a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) account. You have to do an Enterprise Activation to get that to work. Otherwise you are connected to the Blackberry Internet Server account (BIS) provided thru your data line carrier (cingular, verizon, tmobile, or whatever, rogers,o2, ....)
on the BIS you get mail pushed to you once every cycle, about 15-20 minutes.. I think my cingular/at&t does it every 15 mins.

So while using BIS there's no advantage between my gmail account and vzw.blackberry.net account, correct? They just offer the ability get email through RIM.

With the current version of BIS, Gmail is now pushed to the handheld. The same is true of Yahoo mail. This is an advantage over other email accounts that are polled every 15-20 minutes.

Ya, I was going to say, I've sent myself emails within a 5 minute period and received it a couple seconds later on my BB. Looks like the gmail does indeed give you that "true" push email technology.
Thanks for the help! ![Thumbs Up](http://www.blackberryforums.com/images/smilies/thumbs_up.gif)

True. I get my gmail a few seconds after it's sent on my 8800. Even faster that my email app on my computer.

Large company email servers (Yahoo, Gmail, etc) offer instant push to the Blackberry. Smaller email servers such as college accounts, and other misc email accounts...they are checked every 15 mins. If you receive a lot of emails, the 15 mins is decreased to 10, then 5...all depending on how many emails you get in a certain slotted time period which they measure. I receive a lot of emails on my college IMAP account so most likely the BIS server will be checked every 5-10 mins for me.

This is completely untrue.
All email delivery on the BlackBerry is true push e-mail.
BES, BIS, Desktop Rediector... all push email.
Perhaps you are simply misunderstanding what push email is.
It has nothing to do with how often mail gets delivered, or how quickly it is sent.
Push email is determined by WHO is responsible for mail delivery to the end user device.
With all BlackBerry mail delivery, the device NEVER asks the server to deliver mail to it. The server simply sends messages to the device without any user or device intervention. This is the essence of push e-mail.
BES has many advantages over BIS, however you don't need BES for push e-mail.
With BIS, you don't need GMail or Yahoo for push email. Any POP or IMAP or compatible webmail account which is linked through BIS will be push email.

My home email account is through Earthlink. They have a forwarding option through their web client that works faster than if I set it up using BIS. When my Earthlink account is in forwarding mode, any email sent to Earthlink forwards immediately to my BB instantly (in other words, without waiting for the 15-minute polling).

I hear you.. but its not push.. its pulled from your account, then pushed to the BB.. my roadrunner mail comes once every 15minutes.. my gmail could come immediately if I used it..(thanks for that update, didn't last year)..
if there is an intermediary doing the pull vs your device doing the pull its still a pull..

Maybe he is misunderstanding. All email (unless you count the gmail mail app you can download) is push email.
Standard pop3/imap are on 15 minute push to start with. I'm unsure if this business of getting mass emails decreases the time or not,(I haven't heard it one way or another)
Gmail and yahoo and of course your service provider (mine is @mycingular.blackberry.net) are all instant push as of BIS 2.3. And full reconiliatation from handheld iirc.
Everything pushes it's just dependent on how long until it is sent to your device. Practically all mobile/smart phones push 15 minutes. What makes blackberry unique(i think unique) is the instant push capability and the encryption that can be built in and maintained between the BES(enterprise server and the handheld device).

I am relatively new to this.
So my understanding is as one earlier poster put it. The push aspect is that your BB is not dialing into you email account to do a send and recieve (like a lot of mobile phones do) rather it is always on and it is down to the BIS to do the managing of emails (sending and receiving to your device).
With BIS 2.3 I understand that Gmail and Yahoo mail have full reconciliation ie when you delete/read an email from your BB the same occurs in yahoo etc.
However there does appear to be a time delay in receiving email from either of those accounts. I have set my Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and my work email to all work with my BB.
Gmail and work are the fastest as on both of those accounts I have set up rules to forward all email rather than have BIS poll the accounts (BIS appears to be able to access your work exchange email if your company has deployed Outlook Web Access). I then have BIS poll Yahoo and Hotmail and I have not set up any rules to do forwarding. The result is Gmail and work email arrive at my BB faster than they do the gmail web page or my Outlook Client should I have the laptop open. Hotmail and Yahoo vary in speed of delivery up 15 minutes but the email in those accounts is not important enough.
I think BIS has come along way and to have BIS work with your work email via the OWA route is amazing.

I have a BES through Mailstreet.com for the sole purpose of getting my email instantly. Are you saying that if I set up a Gmail account (and switch to BIS) and have my POP3 email forwarded thru that account it will be about the same as with my current BES? My wife has the BIS service with Cingular/AT&T and it takes about 15 mins for her to receive a email from me.

If you use large scale email provides such at Gmail and Yahoo...you get the email instantly pushed to your Blackberry, as if your were using your Blackberry BIS email address. You no longer need to forward emails from all of your accounts to the BIS ![[email address]](?emailimage=a9985e61c8224ee80a314cbcd2c962f7) to get instant push.
I use a college IMAP account and Gmail. Gmail is instantly pushed. My college IMAP account is delayed, but the delay is dependent upon how many emails you receive in a slotted time. For example, if you receive barely any emails each day, the BIS server will check your IMAP account for messages every 15 mins. However, if you are constantly receiving emails (like I am ), the BIS server knows this and adjusts accordingly and checks more frequently. With the number of emails that I receive on my college IMAP account, my Blackberry will be checking every 5-10 minutes. Otherwise, it will be every 15 mins. I say 15 minutes, but in reality it is more like 14.5 minutes (yes, I have actually timed it a few times).
I hope this helps and I wish you luck on setting up BIS!

JGBerry, not sure I'm understanding you completely. I currently have a POP3 email account. I do not have a Gmail account as of yet. My wife has the same POP3 email account and it takes her BB about 15mins to receive email from me or anyone else (we timed it). I would like to save some $'s and switch from the hosted BES I now have to the BIS service but I need to be able to get my email instantly. I thought I understood that if you forward your POP3 email through a Gmail account you could achieve this. Am I missing something?

No I haven't upgraded to 2.3. We just loaded the CD that came with the BB. We bought them about a month ago. I guess my question still is in order to get this "instant" push I would need to forward my POP3 email to a Gmail or Yahoo account. Correct?

WRONG.
It's still PUSH.
Again, push vs. pull is determined by what responsibility the end-user device has in the process of mail delivery to it.
The Blackberry device itself is the key. It NEVER asks for a mail delivery. Doesn't matter how many steps it takes or how many servers are involved or how often BIS pulls mail from your mail server. None of that determines push vs. pull.
If mail reaches your device without your device asking for it to be delivered... it's push mail... plain and simple.
All mail on the BlackBerry behaves this way. All mail on the BlackBerry is push.

So back to my original question. In order to take advantage of this new push email with v2.3 would I need to forward my POP3 email account to a Gmail or Yahoo account if I switch to BIS service to get my email "instantly" as opposed to every 15 minutes or so?

GadgetJunkie.
According to one poster no you simply have BIS talk to your pop email.
I have not found that to be the case, but my provider in the UK is O2 they might be a different to the ones in the US. Safe to answer your question if you can forward email from your pop directly to BIS or to Gmail/yahoo (or have gmail grab email from pop) then instant email.
