Does the click wheel ware?

I've had my 8703e since April 07 and I noticed that when I first got the BB the wheel was a bit stif. Over time and usage scrolling is now smooth, but I noticed that clicking is not being pressed in as much when I click. Almost as if the clicker is going bad.

Does this wheel ware overtime? It's only been 3 months. My carrier will replace the unit, but if it's not going to get any worse than I'd keep it the way it is, but if the wheel is going, I should get the until replaced.

Anyone have a clue if the wheel loosens over time?

Yes, it could loosen more. I know I had (still have as backup) a 7100 whose wheel is loose as a lady of the evening--but still clicks. I never noticed loosening on my two 8700s.

I assume there is some wear and tear over time. Don't know if there are any stats as to how long it will last however.

for the man of the hour who started this lovely thread...i believe the word "wear" is spelled ...well...like "wear"...not ware lol.

and yes, the trackwheel will "wear" down over time. one of the many reasons why RIM switched to a trackball. the track wheel was a great innovation for it's time, but it is time that Blackberry move forward. besides...holding down Alt and scrolling is a pain in the ass (or thumb).

Talked to US Cellular this morning and I guess RIM is sending me a new unit. Although I'm not sure how new it actually is. Most likely refurb, which is a bummer because I've been really careful with this 8703, never dropped, no scratch, etc.... If I get some crappy unit with scratch, I may send it back, and maybe fix the darn wheel by doing some mods. There should be sites on the net to crack this devise and replace parts right???

Anyone do self mods to their devises. Sounds like the Wheel wear is pretty common. I can't imagine that folks live with it once it goes...

the wheel can be replaced a new one will run about 50 bucks. it will also recquire some soldering and desoldering on your part if you arent comfortable doing such thing pay to have it repaired BBRepairshop is good as well as promobility

roadwarrier, if the new one is scratched swap out the case. it is not hard and if you do a search I believe somebody did a write up on how to take it apart.

I hope so. The wheel on my 8700g just quit on me after 13.5 months. If it's really $50, that's a lot less than the insurance deductible. Hmmm. What to do?

Before you go blow $50 bucks on a new track wheel, pop open your phone and try taking either a can of compressed air, or using a air compressor to clean it. This straightened mine right out. pocket lint, dirt, dust, finger oil , build up, etc can cause this issue. I dont know why everyone is so quick to jump at replacement parts. K.I.S.S. , then think about replacement parts.
