Hmmm, I wans't too impressed last night.

I was reading an email. I hit Reply and started to compose a response. I wanted to quote a statement further down in the email. so I scrolled down, highlighted the text, clicked on Menu/Copy, scrolled back up, clicked on Menu/Paste, and BOOOOOOOOOOOOM - the screen goes white, except for a tiny ( like 3 point font) message in the middle of the screen, which said something 'ike Application Error - Reset- OK. The only choice was OK. So I clicked on it it and got an hourglass...for about 45 minutes....then it all came back to life again.

I assume it was resetting itself (like a baterry pull) and downloaded all my thousands of emails, thousands of contacts, calendar items, etc.

But what if I were out of range , or out of the country, and in a spot with no Blackberry service. Would it just stay dead and unusable?

It didn't re download everything. It simply took that long to reboot. You are lucky it came back. Most of the time that would have been a wipe and reload the OS.

correct thats why i started carrying a back up ,current os and dm on a thumb drive so i can repair anywhere.

If the error message was 523, I had the same issue. It happened to me when I was playing brickbreaker. (I wish I could say while I was reviewing important client emails, but I c/n lie)

I downloaded the latest OS from AT&T, and installed it on the 8800 last night. Although it took some time to complete, the problem seems to have been fixed.

Now the question I have (and I should know this) if I have to reload, will my BES settings be automatic? silly question I know.

Would just like to clarify the above.

I understand the idea of carrying a thumb drive, with DM and your backup files on it, such that if you needed to reload the BB from a backup, and had access to a computer, it could be done. And I gather this works even if there were no BB service in the area. HOWEVER, if you have no access to a USB port on a computer, I assume there is no way to restore anything- correct? Ie there is no device that can connect directly to the BB itself - correct???

I am not as much concerned when I am 'in town' have access to my home/work PCs, backups, etc.....but would like to reduce risk while travelling (where I may not have access to a computer). In those cases, the thumb drive is a good idea I suppose, as long as one can get access to the USB port of someone elses computer - not always that easy...
