Quote:

Software For BlackBerry 8800 (TM)

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.2.1.168 (Chinese)

Package Version: 4.2.1.168
Consisting of:

* Applications: 4.2.1.103
* Software Platform: 2.3.0.82
* File name: 8800C_PBr4.2.1_rel168_PL2.3.0.82_A4.2.1.103_SmarTo ne_Vodafone_(Voda_HK).exe
* File size: 65.75MB

Download Site Link: https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...4B931C35A169B0

Instructions for installing:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. It's 4.2 SP2.
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Plug in BB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507/543, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

Anytime. I like to keep an eye out for these things. =]

Can I take the edited lbs.alx file from the .101 installation and plug it in here, or do I need to re-edit (to enable GPS)?

(Maybe I should just go to bed and work on this in the morning before I screw something up.)

John Clark 09-20-2007 12:33 AM

It's probably best to edit the new .alx. Many times the newer .alx's work but unless you compare them you don't know what may be different. It only takes a minute to edit the .alx if you know how to do it.

I've done it before...just too tired tonight to wait for the upgrade to work. Probably work on it this weekend. I'll need to tweak the lbs.alx to get GPS working, the blackberry.alx to get all the themes I want, and the platform.alx to get rid of PTT again. Am I missing anything? This gets more tedious all the time!

John Clark 09-20-2007 12:45 AM

Nope....that's the drill!

All chinese support OS are regular English OS with the CHINESE SUPPORT OPTION, so you can install it without that option.

twoface 09-20-2007 02:52 AM

What about changes?

CBR900RR 09-20-2007 04:22 AM

I don't see any changes yet from 4.2.1.164

Spencer_CDS 09-20-2007 07:42 AM

Yeah, I don't know what kind of changes there're going to be with this ... it's such a slight jump from 4.2.1.101 to 4.2.1.103, but who knows. Probably a few minor back-end bug fixes here or there.

Phrozen Horse 09-20-2007 10:52 AM

There's a bug fix for BES/Domino users where in the previous version any message that had been opened could not be deleted from the handheld.
This version doesn't have this.

Eagerly waiting for 4.2.2 though

Hmm. I wonder if RIM has released a patch for that? After all, they've released patches for the browser/uncaught exception issue, if I'm not mistaken.

I would imagine so. If you know how to do so, there shouldn't be a problem. Just did so on an 8820 for one of my co-workers.

Phrozen Horse 09-21-2007 04:23 AM

Has anyone heard any rumours about 4.2.2 on the 8800?

Uh, I don't think you'll have much luck loading this OS onto a Curve. And when I looked at the included theme files, I didn't see anything for Sprint or Verizon (since this is for GSM phones). I might have missed something though.

Nope, just waiting and waiting and waiting.

I'd like to see it soon, if for no other reason than to encourage me to buy some bluetooth headphones.
