Just need a friend with some patience and a metal cutting CNC to make metal exterior parts. The screen cover would need to be sapphire like a Rolex uses and then we would have to figure out how to allow a RF signal to get both in and out of this device!

It would take hours to get all the dims digitized.

I worry a little when I read this stuff but if the 9000 screen is just as good as my Curve or 8820 screen I would be happy

I like the way you think Gregg! What do you say we start a business building industrial strength blackberries? I can fund the start-up costs. I bet there is a huge market for them out there that RIM isn't addressing. They could have $1000/1.5 years in hardware costs from me instead of $400/year.

Well I got a friend who has the CNC equipment. That is easy to find. Getting the dimensions for the parts programed into the device would be the tough part.

I would be willing to pay extra for a tougher Blackberry.

Leica is offering to replace my LCD screen on the back of my Leica M8 with a sapphire cover which would make it unscratchable but they want $950. I have owned many digital cameras and never scratched the LCD screen on the back so I will save the $950 and hope I am lucky!

I suspect the Bold will be a study and somewhat resistant to damage device. Remember, we will all be replacing our 9000 with the next new model in only a year or so!

Ya Gregg, that's kind of my point. I would probably stick with my Curve if it was built better and wasn't falling apart. The trackball falls out practically every time I turn it upside down and it's loaded with scratches and scrapes. If it was more durable, kinda like my watch or a swiss army knife, I would very seriously consider keeping it a lot longer. I probably will end up with a BOLD but there's nothing compelling in there from what I've seen that makes me rush out a buy one. I played around with the i-3G this weekend. It's also very cheaply manufactured I believe. It's also really slippery in your hands. After playing with it for 5 minutes I got flashbacks of how frustrated I was with it compared with my blackberry. The tactile keyboard is so much better imo.

Just read the review. Doesn't sound like the 9000 is quite ready for prime time. I would be wary of buying this device right off the bat. Sound like it loaded with bugs, still.

You can bet that RIM will not introduce it with these "bugs". I have owned many first release Blackberry devices and the worst thing I have seen is a little dust under the screen.

You can bet the software/OS will be tweeked to the nth degree and ready for sale. This is no iPhone2, it is a new RIM product. RIM is not one to dump hardware on the market and "promise" it will be fixed with the new OS. LOL!

I am a little disappointed by the cheap plastic and scratchable screen. I will probably stick with my curve for a little longer.

I agree, these are serious issues. Especially the comment about 10 battery pulls a day? C'mon! I WAS really hoping for a stellar review. I will still wait, but it seems like I may be disappointed, and I may end up with that "other" phone. Noooooooooooo!

As Sith and others have said, the software issues (i.e. restarts, and needed battery pulls) will be corrected before the At&t launch. I don't think they will be okay with devices operating in this fashion. Even if there is an OS update just after launch, I am A-okay with that, since the review states a 6 minute OS upgrade!

My only question is, are there reasons that RIM has not used a glass screen cover instead of the plastic that so many have been complaining about?

Glass is heavy and is not needed. There are plenty of scratch resistant plastics out there, the fact that RIM chose not to use it troubles me.

Isn't the LCD screen behind the plastic case, so, worst case, you could change the front cover if it got a really bad scratch? If you're that worried: ZAGG | invisibleSHIELD | iPhone, iPod Cases, Screen Protectors, Covers, Shields, Skins, Invisible Shield

I use a screen protector (not the $12 invisishield but a cheapo generic cut to fit) on my 8800 as I don't keep it in a holster or case and no problems.

The reboots and plastic screen are a big concern for me. I was going to get a Bold and use along with my new iPhone, but now Im not so sure. I think RIM should switch to glass screens like their thunder device will have.

You shouldn't have to. With the premium price that RIM is going to charge for this device, you would think it would be built with higher quality materials.

i was hoping RIM would have upped their build quality on their next series of phones.
its seriously the only thing i cannot stand with their handsets.

i really dont like the idea of forking out $800 for handset thats gonna get creaky after 3 months of use. :( break a trackball in less than 12 months and develop dust behind the screen, in less than 3 weeks.

hopefully the release phones will be better.

im really disappointed. another couple of years with a awesome device inside a cheap and nasty case.

I'm nervous but crazy excited!!!!

That review has me feeling a bit anxious and confused! It's like brick breaker playing in my head with that fast and multiple ball speed right now!

Come on RIM and Bold! Bring it on daddy!
