With the iPhone Apple sets the prices the carriers can charge. It's all part of the agreement to get the devices in the first place. Apple has always kept strict control over their reseller prices with all products. Steve Jobs is a notorious micro-manager.

The initial pricing on the Bold looks unfortunately high. I attribute that largely to the device being geared towards corporate users. The Javelin is expected to be more consumer-oriented and carry a price tag half the Bold's, maybe even less.

Over the noon hour I confirmed that the Rogers store King - Bay (Toronto) office complex had received its launch kit today and actually held a Bold (non operating). I my view the keys on the Bold are better spaced than on the Curve.
Staff at the store still did not know when it would be available for official launch.
Pricing was said to be possibly between $399 (ouch!) and $199 on a three year contract. There is a waiting list at this store and the nearby Wireless Wave store so Rogers can probably get away (at least initially) with the $399 price.
It is interresting that Rogers may charge $399 for the Bold, yet charge $199 for a similarly equiped 3g iphone. I guess this is consistent with Rogers charge of $60 ($48 with corp discount) for 25 megs of data for corp (BES) users as compared to $30 for 6 gigs of data for consumer (iphone and non bes) users. No question that Blackberry makes the best business/data device and the Bold looks like a winner, but I do not know how Rogers can have such a disparity between business centric and consumer centric devices.
Actually there's a new BES plan of $40 for 300mb now.

Of course that's the demo dummy but the final product won't be any different. What makes you say that?

Again, rather than "General 9000 Series Discussion", this forum should be called "The Wait-and-See Forum" lol

Where would one find an announcement? On the actual Rogers Wireless homepage, or is there a newsfeed or link where they post these things?

But about it being late in the date... you think Rogers would make a press announcement while a lot of people in Alberta and BC are still in bed? It's still only 0950 here!
That's true. I always forget about the time differences but still in bed at 9:50AM, sheesh. Lol.

Any publicly traded company, like Rogers, will generally only make important announcements either before the TSX market opens (9:30 a.m. EDT) or after the market closes (4:00 p.m. EDT).

For example, the July 9th Rogers press release that announced the 6 gigs for $30 price plan for data on the iPhone 3G was issued at 9:10 a.m. EDT that day.

The release date for the Bold may not be regarded as a market-moving announcement, so they might make it whenever they choose, whether the market's open or not. We'll see.

Rogers generally issues its press releases at CNW, so if you want to keep an eye out for it, check newswire.ca.

Every time I hear what you Canadians pay for data I get a chill. Man, those rates are what I'd expect from Tony Soprano! I'd hate to see a bill for data where the user went over his allotment.

Default Scheduled for Rogers Early Next Week

TORONTO (AP) — The new BlackBerry model should be coming to North America within a month now that Research In Motion Ltd. has started selling it in Germany and Chile.

The BlackBerry Bold is a high-end BlackBerry that has twice the screen resolution of current models made by RIM. The Bold, or 9000, matches the resolution, but not the size, of the screen on Apple Inc.'s iPhone, which has emerged as a potent competitor in the smart-phone category.

AT&T Inc. says it will be the exclusive U.S. carrier for the Bold, as it is for the iPhone. An AT&T spokesman declined to say Thursday when the company will release it.

But Peter Misek, an analyst with Canaccord Adams, said he expects AT&T to start selling it on Sept. 15 and Rogers Communications in Canada to release it on Aug. 18.

Some stores in Canada have already unveiled a store model and fliers.

Genuity Capital Markets analyst Deepak Chopra also expects it will be released in the United States in mid-September.

RIM has begun to roll out the BlackBerry Bold in some markets through partnerships with wireless carriers there. RIM unveiled the Bold in Chile on July 22 and in Germany on Aug. 6.

RIM had no comment about specific plans in North America.

Misek said the Bold will cost about $200 in the United States depending on the contract.
