OK our corporate IT dept. are completely clueless when it comes to looking after the BES.

So, If we were to get our own BES, does it have to be physically close to the exchange server? If our exchange server is also handling several other domains, would this cause issues?

We are in Southern Ontario (canada) and our exchange server is in Missouri.

I can probably get a BES free from our provider, and just thought I would like to do that instead of trying to deal with our corp helpdesk

In short, yes it needs to be physically close to avoid latency issues.

Most other requirements can be found here

I run a BES that interfaces two Exchange servers - one is local, the other is connected through a VPN tunnel. Now, we only have 3 users on that exchange server, but it does work.

Having said that, it's not just a simple matter of firing up a BES server, there are permission issues that need to be addressed, so unless you have full access to Active Directory, it's a moot point.
