Default What do you do about WIFI?

Please Login to Remove!

I have many users asking me to setup WIFI for their phones.
We have an old simple router that is WEP only. Yeah I know it can be hacked in 5 minutes.
It keeps having issues when too many users get on, I really dont want to setup a new one, but looks like we might have to.

Every time someone gets a new WIFI phone they want it on th WIFI.
I keep fending them off saying we have an old router and its for salesmen and techs laptops only. I really dont want them all on it and have no way to see if they are looking at porn, downloading large files, etc.... and affecting the rest of the systems.

SO what do you do about WIFI?

Seems to me you should be able to monitor what goes through the router/network ISP.

Why no dataplan on BJ
Boss thinks 500 year for it is too much.
Got it for free and have a spare one too.
I look cooler with it since I am the Admin here.
I am too cheap to buy a WIFI phone or dataplan.

Why no new router
I dont want to enter in the pass code on 100 laptops.
If I email out then they will give it out to everyone here.
Hard to monitor WIFI with a cheap router.

500 a year for a data plan!? Yikes...

You could use MAC address filtering and WEP keys that would be one step up...

Have you got a Proxy server that can monitor and filter web traffic?

I don't know why your wireless router is hooked up to the internet directly. Why not just disable DHCP in it, disconnect the WAN, and connect the device to your existing network? Aside from the security concerns of using WEP, that would seem a much better way to go.

Dude, if you don't wanna configure 100 laptops, enable RADIUS on your server and use WPA Enterprise. That would at least alleviate your config concerns - users could just use their AD credentials.

Also, I agree with TargetIT 100%.

I agree as well, but I would suggest getting a device that supports a bridged mode. I've seen routers reset there configs and start really causing strangeness on a network because of multiple DHCP servers.

As it seems you want a cheap and easy solution. How about this:

1. Buy new router
2. Configure with same SSID and WEP

You are online, new router and don't have to reconfigure any devices.

You will need to come up with an internal policy on acceptable use. You can either add a monitoring solution or trust your employees.

Go figure it died on me 30 min after I read troydbrown's post, Everyone is back online.

Glad I saved my notes on its config.

Now to test this new one out around the building.
