Question Using HTTP with no wireless service but while connected by cable

Please Login to Remove!

Does anyone know how I can use a HTTP application running on my Blackberry when I am not in mobile coverage BUT I am connected to a Windows PC with broadband via the USB cable.

We are running a custom business application that normally does HTTP communcation wirelessly. Certain of our users are either out of coverage for long periods of time or need to download lots of data. For those users we want to let them user HTTP via the USB cable to a PC that is connected to the internet through a normal broadband connection.

It seems like this should be doable with some kinds of simple proxying approach.

Any suggestions?

With a BES & VPN connection deploying the Handheld Manager will allow the BlackBerry to establish a direct connection via either Bluetooth*/USB cable to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and all would-be-wireless data will be routed through the network.

I suppose that if you do not have a VPN connection, you could install the router remotely in the DMZ and forward port 4101 to it, but you would also have to configure the router address manually in the Handheld Manager for each user. I am not sure about the authentication process, but all data is still AES or Triple DES encrypted.

*Bluetooth connection requires 4.1 Handheld and Desktop Software.

To build on T-Roy, BES v4.0 has a component called the BlackBerry router. The router, which is software, normally runs on the same machine as the rest of BES but could run on a seperate box. One of the routers key roles is to perform "least cost routing".

If the user is connected via USB to the network, then updates will go out via the LAN rather than the wireless network.
