Can't AT&T track the location and work with the police on this theft? I would think with all the technology available today they would be able to do so and track down the thief that stole it. We have gotten no where with AT&T on doing this.
Unfortunately, I don't believe so. The most you could have AT&T do is block the PIN and IMEI of the device so that the person can only use it as a regular phone and SMS text.
There are things you could have done to the device while it was still in your possession to assist you in tracking it if it was lost/stolen. Such as placing a GPS tracking program on it. Unfortunately there is not much if anything you can do now.

Only CTU and Jack Bauer can track it. It's theoretically possible, but the equipment necessary is monstrously expensive and is only employed by federal agencies.

Are these types of programs the ones that are ridiculously expensive, or are there really economical ways of doing this?

InstaMapper - Free Real-Time GPS Tracking is what I use on my BB for my wife and kids and I've installed it on my wife's BB for the kids to track mom when she's gone shopping. Saves them from calling to find out if she's on her way home.
Sorry to hear about that. might want to check out "roblock theft prevention" software, lots of nice options, including GPS location (if its on the phone) and remote wipe so that no information falls into the wrong hands. it will also send your contacts via SMS befor the wipe if you like...
If the phone is on BES server, you can ask the admin to "Kill" the BB remotely.
This will wipe out all the personal data on the phone and disable the phone. Once you confirmed that the phone has received the Kill command and wipped out, Ask AT&T to suspend the phone and services.
The police can track your phone if it's active, but only to the cell site being used, so like within a mile. Getting the exact location requires the phone to notify a server of it's location via GPS then they can track it but that would be way too Big Brother for us without our consent ahead of time with software like InstaMapper. This was recently used locally to find an elderly lady with diabetes who didn't make it back from the store. After about 3 hours the husband called police who used the cell service to get to within a mile of her then tracked down the route she would have used and found her in a diabetic coma. She's fine now and of course the masses are scared that BigBrother can track them now too...lol
