I've read that users should have a seamless transition between UMA and edge networks.

My device is set to Wifi preferred, however I encounter many dropped calls due to inconsistent wifi....so I did a test.

While placing a call using UMA, I turned off the wireless router & the call dropped. Is the call supposed to automatically switch to edge without dropping?

Any ideas are appreciated.

your testing methods are flawed.

as the signal degrades from your wifi connection, the phone will seek out for a cellular connection. if you discontinue the signal before it tries to connect elsewhere, of course the call will drop... just like if you were on a non-wifi connection.

it does not maintain a connection to both cell and wifi at the same time... if it did, then your method of testing would end in a positive result.

I was getting dropped calls from Edge to UMA and UMA to EDGE. I had 4 Bars with Edge and was sitting 3 feet from the router. Each time it changed the call was lost. I did a soft reboot and the problems appears to have been solved.

His testing method may be flawed, but the fact is that it doesn't work the way it should for me. I also lose calls on UMA when my EDGE is turned on. I can switch from UMA to EDGE when arriving home but leaving home I can't go from UMA to EDGE. I do get quite a few dropped calls when on just UMA.

I also seem to be able to make the EDGE --> UMA transition smoothly but get dropped when going UMA --> EDGE.

Happens every time I drive away from the house while on the phone.

Upgrade to the latest OS available for your phone.

Also go to Connections>WiFi options>[hotspot]>edit>[x] Allow Inter-access point handover

Thanks, LA. I had this option checked in 4.2 and the pre-T-Mobile version of 4.5 that I was using but no success. I just looked and it was not checkmarked after switching to the T-Mobile update. I have checkmarked it now and will report back on whether or not it helped.
