Default Wifi practicality on a smartphone

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

First of all thanks for this wicked forum. Definitively an invaluable recourse when it comes to all thinks blackberry

Recently a local carrier has started making blackberry phones available directly from them & offering the usual subsidies upon subscribing too a contract. Am thinking about taking the plunge for the blackberry bold since my Treo 680 although holding up nicely is becoming somewhat outdated. The only thing I wished to clarify was with regards to the wifi. Is it that much of a useful feature to have given the posts I’ve read about the phone reverting back to the carrier data plan instead of the selected wifi connection. Also theatrically could you download files from the internet over for example u university wifi connection or is the blackberry hotspot browser not capable of doing so? (Or any other smartphone on the market for that matter…)

Best regards

Wirelessly posted (T-Mobile 8120)

You can connect to any wifi location as long as you know the password. I believe that the max file size is 2.9 MB per file. You can stream as much as you want though.

Found this thread over at the crackberry forums (Hope its not a problem?) :

forums.crackberry.com/f83/max-file-download-bb-76042/

Basically it seems its something that can be administered by the BB Enterprise Solution. However how can you control the limits being an individual consumer & also given that I am downloading over Wifi therefore the carrier has no control over the data traffic.

Cheers

I have in effect an unlimited 3G plan, but find WiFi useful sometimes when browsing or downloading applications, because it's always faster for me.

If you're roaming it has more value, as WiFi is likely to be a LOT cheaper than using the operator's network where you happen to be, but best turn off the 3G radio while you do it to make sure you you don't use it by accident.
