Can I install BES 4.1.1 along side Exchange 2007 and then apply the patching to bring it up to 4.1.5 ?

Note:

This was for testing purposes only as I wanted to see if it could be done or not.

A few years ago I worked for a company who's CTO left before I started working for them, he basically ran off with all their software including BES. After searching around I managed to find someone who worked for a company that sold BES and he was able to get them a download/install version of 4.1 for Exchange.

The other day I was going through my CDs and I realized I still had, but without the SRP ID/Key, and CALs.

This weekend I migrated my SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 which was a feat in itself. Anyhow I got rid of my BPS server and thought since the BES 4.1.6 trial server time bombs why I don't I give this 4.1.0 a try. So I read here that you need 4.1.3 for Exchange, boy weren't you wrong!

I downloaded what was needed, the Mapi Cdo, SQL 2005 Express with the Management Studio, and the BES 4.1.5 service pack as it was the largest upgrade since 4.1.0.

After creating the BESadmin account on Exchange 2007, and adding it to the server (a different box no SBS) and logged in as BESadmin I installed the SQL 2005 Express, then installed the Exchange Mapi Cdo, then installed BES 4.1.0. Once I got to the end where it asks "start sevices?" I clicked that option off and applied 4.1.5 to the server after it installed I agreed to starting the services which all of them started successfully.

So now I am going to apply the rest of the patches unless someone can tell me if I add the latest one 4.1.6.mr2 if it will fix everything between 4.1.5 and that patch?

Thanks
Andrew

I found the Trail BES for Exchange 4.1 that comes with the 20 CALs doesn't time bomb by the software as I orignally thought it did, the SRP ID is the time bomb.

I took the SRP ID and from the trial and applied it to my 4.1.0 server which patched to 4.1.5 and when I started the Blackberry Manager it told me my key was valid for 90 days.

So technically one could download the BES for Exchange trial and apply their registred SRP ID and keys if they were doing a full installation.

Exchange 2007 is not supported for BES 4.1.1 and therefore I will advise that upgrade the BES to 4.1.5 and above before moving your users from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007.

After that move is completed, run HandheldCleanup.exe which is on the BES for the users that had their mailbox moved to Exchange 2007.

Please refer to KB00140 for running of HandheldCleanup

Read my notes. It's not a question if Exchange 2007 SP1 supports 4.1.1 or 4.1.0 which does install without any problems in the Exchange 2k7 enivironment, I am just pointing out to those who have less than 4.1.3 they can install it but have to apply 4.1.5 (SP5) to it before they can start the services.

I know, been there done it. I have SBS 2008 running with BES 4.1.6 which I RIM gave me fro free! But before I downloaded 4.1.6 I pulled out an old 4.1.0/1 version of BES and installed it without any problems.

Merry Xmas btw.

It may work for you but in RIM's support matrix and if you were to contact them for support, they will tell you that it is not supported.

Btw, I have came across an admin friend of mine who installed 4.1.3 on a server 2003 64bit, which was not a supported environment, before he upgraded it up to 4.1.6.

The agent was not able to be installed into the environment.

In task manager, BBAgent.exe was not started at all.

In the end, as this was not a supported environment for that version of BES, he had to get a copy of full 4.1.6 from the carrier.

This might be alittle different from your scenario, but nevertheless it is still best to follow the tech documentation, or else you will not be able get support from RIM.

lf you call RIM for support, they will tell you that this is not a supported environment.

To my understanding right now, installing BES onto a server 2008 OS is not supported. To play it safe, do not try it, as if you were to contact RIM, they will not be able to support you. This also applies to Hyper-V environment as well.

BTW, merry christmas to you too.
