Yes. And mass storage mode will need to be re-enabled. It won't work afterward.

OK, I finally attempted this. I'm happy to say that I did not brick my phone! However, I was unable to debrand.

After connecting to the tool and letting it runs its course, I received a fail message on my PC, with an error related to a specific file. On the bb, screen, I never got to the mode where I could load a branding file. After that, I just reloaded .185.

Did you guys run into this error when working on the Bold? Any suggestions?

You are probably running an older version. Make sure the configuration file has support for the Bold.

Thanks for responding estabulla.

I am running the latest. I installed it via .msi then copied all the additional files to the proper directory.

...

So, assuming I cannot work around this error, if the "no application..." message is on the bb, can I load a branding file anyway, or does the bb have to be in the proper mode?

No it should not be in service mode. Proceed to load (I am assuming you know how to).

I am a bit nervous to spill out the process as I am not sure what the forum rules are with respect to this particular issue.

You need to have the latest OS file for your device installed on your PC. I ran into this error as well.

See my post above.

The rules are that this software and process is not mentioned by name, nor is it discussed. Several of us know what it is and how to use it, but it is not discussed.

Yea, I think this thread has gotten a little out of control here...

It needs to be cleaned up ASAP or removed all together.

I managed to debrand, and I have the 2g/3g selection now.

I still got unexepected things on the device and on the pc, but I pressed foward with changing the branding.

Scary but worked.

The GOOD news is that apparently something is not getting loaded due to the errors, and because it is not getting loaded, I still have mass storage access....

What are the advantages of not using 3G and just using 2G or EDGE?

I only see the option to do Either 3G, 2G or 3G & 2G.

If i just select 2G, can i still use everything like browsing, IM, and all that?

2G (EDGE) does not give you concurrent voice and data. 3G does. Which means you could tether your BB as a modem and still make and receive calls. Battery drain is not relevant when you are tethered as it charges your battery in the process!

I switched from 3G to EDGE simply to save battery life.

When I used the 3G network, I had to charge my BB everyday, no exception, that is if it lasted the entire day.

Using the EDGE option, I don't have to charge for 3 days. The 3G network is just a battery killer.

I don't notice any speed difference in sending emails or text messages at all. In fact, I think it might be slightly quicker with the EDGE network.

For those with really crappy battery life, try the switch if you can. I guarantee that you will gain a few days out of your BB Bold.

I get better battery life on edge, too.

I wonder how much of that is edge itself and how much is because the phone is not searching for 3g when 3g is not available. I may lock mine to 3g only and see how the battery is, just for kicks...

I live in a 3G area, so searching for it non-stop seems ridiculous.

Since turning 3G off, this BB is just as good, if not better than my previous 8310.

I just did this to my AT&T Bold today. If you follow the instructions carefully it works fine. I couldn't make it through a day without charging in 3G mode, and hoping switching it to 2G will allow me to make it through a day without a charge. Otherwise I am going to have to go back to my 8800. For those interested in how to do this there are a ton of postings on GSM-Forum.
