using wifi on 8900 without data plan
Please Login to Remove!
Hello everyone! Before buying this phone I looked through the FAQ section to make sure i would be able to use wifi without a data plan on my 8900.
Quote:
Do I need a data plan to get email?
Yes, without a data plan all you have is phone, SMS, and PIM services. (ie... Outlook, Contacts, Calendar ect..) EXCEPT if your Blackberry has WiFi, in which case you can connect to the Internet through a wireless access point (a router at home, in a coffee shop, etc.) when it is in range.
|
Just got the phone, and set up my home wifi. I verified that the wifi is turned on, and it has a wifi and uma icon in the top right of the screen.
Problem is that when I hit the "browser" icon on the home screen it just tells me that "you are not currently subscribed to a web2go plan; click here to view plans and get the web"
how to i brows the web/get email using wifi?

You don't. You need a BlackBerry data plan.

just incase there are any other noob's looking for how to do this....
Open your browser (yes, the one that isn't working) navigate to Menu > Options >
Browser Configuration. on the top, change browser to "hotspot browser". then go back to browser options and click general properties, here again change browser to "hotspot broser"
NOW WIFI WORKS WITHOUT DATA PLAN

You shouldn't get charged for browsing and D/L'ing stuff when on wi-fi connection as it does not put a strain on TMO's network.

No, I'm trying to keep people from using workarounds.
A BlackBerry plan is the right way to use BlackBerry devices.

...says who??? the decision is best left to the owner with options presented to them. . . .
Why would you restrict people from using work-arounds? you must be heavily invested in RIMM . . .

This thread is going no where.
"A BlackBerry plan is the right way to use BlackBerry devices". I guess what is he trying to say is that if you wanna utilize the full potential of a blackberry data plan may be required. However, if you wanna use it just as a phone and browse internet, you can definitely do that.
On my other berry I just have an email plan and I browse websites using the Wifi browser. Only some of my 3rd party which require data connection do not work and I am OK with it.

No, I want the mobile phone service providers and handset manufacturers to get their money just like I get mine.
When everybody gets money, that's Capitalism.

Believe me, they get their money even if people are not using BB services. For any person to purchase a Blackberry phone, must pay some amount, right?
RIM gets the money for the phone, the carrier gets its' money for other services. Otherwise they (the carriers) wouldn't offer Blackberry phones without BB plans. ;)

lol, I really hope your joking.
I get to have my cake and eat it too. At home, at my University, and in the university district of my city I have WiFi everywhere I go. I get my cool 8900, free internet/email, and a low monthly phone plan from TMo.

I'm not an idiot, and I have a good sense of humor.
However, in this case, neither applies. I'm genuinely pissed off at people like the OP that are trying to scam the system.

I'm not joking in the slightest. You and the OP are scammers. Pure and simple.
Would you like it if I came into your house and just started drinking beer out of your fridge that I didn't pay for? No, you wouldn't.
