Default Help Maximizing my BES uses?

Please Login to Remove!

Hey Guys,

I am posting this for basic help as far as putting the BES server to its maximum use. I am not an expert with the BES server and basically inherited it at my job.

Last week I went through my first knife-edge upgrade and we jumped from version 4.1.0 to 4.1.3. (Note for some reason 4.1.4 won't go through the database upgrade without an error, hopefully I can figure this one out)

Anyhow, I noticed immediately what you guys probably already know. That I would be a different world as far as functionality. I need some help even just ideas to put some of the new features to work.

Right now we use the server to its BARE minimum. I am just told to add users to setup email with their blackberries. We dont use policies, groups or anything else.

Can anyone give me some ideas that would help put some of the functionality to use? I work in a law enforcement agency if that helps? Feel free to drop even a small quip on what I could do. I have no problem trying to figure out the actual steps to getting something going.

Maybe you should ask the users what they would like to do with it.

Some times they have great ideas

One nice feature that you got for that upgrade is Hard Delete Support - so if you archive an email in Outlook (or use the shift-delete option) it will delete from the BB as well.

When I upgrade to a new version that has new features, I try to send out tips to my users (no more than 1 a week so they can absorb them). The Hard Delete is one that they will enjoy - you'll have to configure it on the BES to work though.

BTW - you can jump right to 4.1.6 without doing 4.1.4.

Thanks for the tip on the multiple delete thats pretty cool! (its the little things)
Also, I didnt know I could leap from 4.1.3 - 4.1.6. When I first contacted blackberry about ordering the migration kit (then i was told about knife edge) I was informed my company didn't have any support with them so we couldn't get the major upgrade or whatever but we could get to 4.1.6. They told me I "had" to do it incrementally.

Anyways, if anyone knows anything else keep it coming. Also, I will try to ask the users it was silly of me not to do so already being im sure they have those little tweaks they wish could work. I think I didn't ask just yet because I don't feel confident on my own knowledge of the BES general capabilities.

All SP's and MR's are culmative so no incremental patching is needed.

Not to get off topic but does anyone know what to do in the event that a service pack doesn't upgrade when there is an error executing a SQL statment.

TBH I would get to SP6 before telling your users much coz SP5 had many changes and you get shiny new things like HTML email and free/busy (for device OS 4.5+) -

Do you have MDS installed as part of your BES build? I have seen Error executing SQL statement many times and have only ever managed to get around it by deleting the MDSS and MDSS_BIS databases from SQL before re-running the install. Doesn't seem to break anything as they get recreated during the SP install.

Yes I actually do have MDS installed. Please note that after the first upgrades I was able to see the MDS server from the BES' manager. I had never seen that option under the server listings. I haven't put that to any use as its totally new to me I will definitely look into uninstalling/reinstalling it.
