This came from another list I am on about a known bug in the 8700. Seems there is a latency issue along with problems on activation.

We heard from RIM today that the lag time on the Reply that we're experiencing has been reported elsewhere and is now recognized by RIM as a flaw in the OS on the 8700. They will be working on a hotfix for this, and we'll continue to bug them until it's out... I'll keep you up to date.

We've run into the same issue here. Even when we've "wiped" the handheld, we've had situations where we've had to restart the Enterprise Activation up to three times before it would pass the 90% mark.

One other situation of note:

When I try to Reply to a message from an internal sender, there is usually a 10 second delay before the actual Reply menu comes up. When I reply to an external sender, there is no lag. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

We had the same problem trying to activate a number of units. What seemed to work for us is to reboot the 8700 (cap-alt-del) and then reconnect to the Desktop Manager and let the activation finish. It does not work if you use the Handheld Manager app.

I just activated the 8700c yesterday with BES 4.x. At times the device will "hang" and become unresponsive to keystrokes/wheel for 3-7 seconds. This usually happens when it's sending/receiving (but not always). I spoke with our BES support staff, and they tell me that RIM is aware of the issue and that it is isolated to the 8700c.

I had no activation issues. I did notice that the device slowed down drastically when it hit 90% of the activation completion.

The weird thing is that my 7290 exhibited the same issue when connected to the same BES server. I will post an update if I find out more info.

Our BES admin wonders if RIM was doing their development of the 8700 on the new 4.1 BES? Regardless, they need to fix it. It is a major pain to fumble your way through an activation. Each time it seems to respond differently. Activating through the cable seems to be the best way however.

I had a whole, large deployment lock up on 90%. We tried deleting the desktop [sync] service book then undelete it, which didnt work. The only thing that worked was we had to wipe each handheld then activate them.

Out of 18 that I activated, I had about 5 that hung at 90%... doing the security worked on all 5. I could not correlate it to emails, or any other item that gets synced during the activation.

also watch for 8700's that do eventually complete activation but are missing files or components - our last big batch was a huge struggle to get past the 90% marker, and then we found that 'activation complete' did not include calendar appointments, mail folders, or even address book entries. Sometimes the missing stuff turned up a bit later, others we had to reactivate again to get a full and complete bb.

When I get the hanging I find turning the wireless off and on restarts it - quicker than rebooting!
