Default Storm2 GPS

I read the specs on the new Verizon Storm2 at Crackberry today, but am not sure if the unit's GPS is "true" GPS (GPS satellites), or the less accurate cell-tower triangulation method. Anybody know? Thanks in advance.

Yes all phones have to have a real GPS receiver as per the law. The law being E911 so they can locate you. What people got upset about the GPS is the carrier could lock it down to only work for E911 or application that they would charge the customer for. Now all smart phones should be wide open to use the GPS however you wish.

I have just received my Storm 2 today from Vodafone in the UK and as posted above I can confirm that the GPS is fully functional. In fact it seems to be a bit quicker at syncing with the satellites than my Bold 9000. Now all I need is a faster car to get me there quicker!

Default Storm2 GPS cont'd

Thank you both for commenting, good info. Verizon has disabled the GPS in the past, but recently made it available in some units (for instance the "Tour"). Do you think or know if Verizon will release the Storm2 with "true" GPS functionality, like the Tour, or cripple it? Thanks in advance.

The days of crippling GPS on all Verizon smart phones is over. Verizon knows that by doing things like that will just tick the customers off. So yes the storm 2 will be as good or better than the Tour. The reason for better is because the storm 2 may have used a better GPS chipset.

Verizon is moving more into open devilment on a lot of their smart phone. This is great news for all of us.
