If you do not have a blackberry data plan, you will not have service books, and you won't have use of the blackberry/RIM applications that require data.
When you had the other SIM in the device, the one for the account with a blackberry data plan, you needed to force the service books to be pushed to the device. This usually happens when booting up after you reinsert the battery. For info, though, see

EDIT: I'm not sure about this, but if the service provider does not support the storm model, then it may not push service books to the storm anyway. That is beside the point in your case since you don't have a data plan, but it may be relevant if you don't get service books with the borrowed SIM.
