Default No Standard Modem

Please Login to Remove!

Based on your reference to the registry you sound like you know the pc. I assume you checked the device manager for the modem? You could download 4.1 from RIM but it should be the same. Don't have any other ideas.

I did a fresh install of 41 desktop software (deleted dirs of old one as well as registry keys) and still| no standard modem shows up? Thinking the 41 I have was changed in any way (used cd that came with 8700c) I used a previous 41 cd and still no dice. I even tried with 40 executable and 41 upgrade from files we downloaded. Same thing. How do I get standard modem to show? Win xp pro on a dell d600 if it matters

After you installed 4.1, did you then install the handheld software from the Cingular site? Then sync the 8700 so it finds the hardware. After that you should see the standard modem. If you followed those steps and it isn't there, then I don't know what to tell you other than some setting on your Dell is causing the problem.

Since I am in no hurry to get this to work, I figured I would just email Cingular and give them the 3 lines I needed on my plan, so there would be no confusion as to what I was asking for.

I never explained in my email what I was trying to do or that I had any problems.

This is the reply I got from the email:

"In regards to your first email, you do not need to have both the WIX
Extended Internet and Wireless Internet Express pay per use. These
features have the same functionality. Please disregard the "/" in front
of any features on your account; this does not affect how the features
work.

After reviewing your account, I see that the reason you may have been
able to configure your Blackberry is that you were missing a Text
Messaging feature. A Text Messaging feature is necessary to be able to
email on your Blackberry. I have added this feature for you."

This morning after receiving this reply, I logged on and noticed allot of small charges on my account. I then called but now, I had 3 things to talk about.

1. I have not received my return label for my 7290.
2. Charges totalling $26.12 for "Data Transfer wireless internet ex"
3. Removing the Text Messaging and adding the 3 WIX lines

I got the charges removed and was told it was because of the this on my plan?

"WRLSS INTRNT XPRS PAY PER USE $0.00"

She removed this line and then transfered me to the Data Group. I talked to a very nice guy who seemed helpful, I explained what I was trying to do, and next thing I knew he was on the same page of the forum reading the instructions from the Modem Setup thread. He was very concerned that based on that setup I would get charged on a per KB basis.

So, he added this to my plan:

CIRCUIT SWITCHD DATA $0.00
/WIX DATA CONNECT $0.00

He also said the initial string should be preceeded with an AT and be this (the isp.cingular in lower case rather than upper):

AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","isp.cingular"

As far as my features i have
WIX
PDA BLACKBERRY UNL 44$

I keep still getting error 736 whenever I connect, I switched to the old sim card, rechecked my settings 6 million times, deleted rreadded the blackberry plan and wix, Resent serv books, reg now, And on and on and on, Keep getting Error 736, the whole time. Also TCP settings

And on my 3rd party apps like Web messanger I get the Tunnel not found Error and also verichat does the same thing.

I don't know why it just seems like something is defective on my account, or am I just not having the right features?
That error is almost alwasy casued by either an initialization string error or the username password.

The TCP settings APN values need to be set according to the type of account you have. You can't always tell by the SIM color. My SIM is the Orange SIM but I have a blue account and therefore need the blue account settings. Otherwise I would need the orange account settings. have you tried both?

I Have no idea, It just does not make sense to me, I really don't know where to go from here, I'm almost thinking defective device, But I dont know

The fact that the modem is dialing out and trying to register with the system and the system is giving you an error indicates it is most likely not the unit. I am at a loss on what else to suggest to you. You could always exchange the unit and try again or wipe and start over before you install any other applications or change any other settings.

Default Data Charges

Well I do see data usage this am on my online account. Called and was told that for my firm it's .0048 cents per kb. For me that would be ok for an usage at an airport or some other spot for email but not general web browsing. We will see for sure when my bill comes out next week.

What a day, I have dealt with 4 CS people from Cingular and have no hope of getting this to work now. They were polite and seemed to know their stuff, but none of them would just do what I asked. Each of them made changes to my plan, just not what I asked for :(

After the first 3, I realized none of my 3rd party software or either browser worked anymore. What a huge step backwards.

Another call to Cingular CS. The last guy got everything else working again by deleting all my plans and rebuilding from scratch. When I asked about the WIX entries, he claimed to have added them, but I can't see them online.

I will try my laptop today, but like I said, I have no hope of it working. I am just glad everything is working again.

barjohn & aaron - YOU GUYS ROCK! I'm up on Cingular Orange using the WAP.CINGULAR configuration above, and using the user/pwd combo that barjohn suggested. So how much is this costing me??? Is it fall under my BB unlimited data plan?

Default Error 692 - Harware failure

I am on cingular orange and setup everything just like suggested. When I went into the network connection to connect, i received a error 692-hardware failure in modem. I checked the modem and it is in hardware and the diagnostics and it passed. I tried the two different initialization strings mentioned but neither worked. Any ideas on why I am getting this error?

Does anyone know of any extra charges associated with teathering?

For example, I currently have the unlimited data plan. Will I get banged for any additional costs?

Thanks

Warning: This answer applies to Cingular (Orange), and is not expert advice, but my experience and what I learned from my battle with Cingular (who I do not consider my enemy - just sparring partner).

I have been dealing with this question in other threads, but as far as I can tell, the answer is "maybe."

Now for a more useful (hopefully) answer... I was told there was an extra $20 charge for unlimited use of the WAP.cingular APN, then I discovered there was a 5MB limit on this plan, and finally I was told that Cingular does not have a WAP APN and they only use blackberry.net APN for non-BES customers.

Here is what I know (I think) and how I know it:

You must have some sort ot WAP plan for teathering to work. There are two MediaNet plans plus MediaNet pay-as-you-go, which apparently use WAP.cingular. Your Cingular Browser and BB UNL plan uses the blackberry.net APN, but this is not enough for teathering to work.

I know this because my account was originally provisioned with MediaNet and I teathered with no problem. I had it removed because I was racking up heavy overages reported on my account online and the rep told me that it was provisioned wrong because MediaNet is unnecessary with BB UNL. He "fixed" it. Teathering stopped working. I called to have the wap.cingular reinstated, but they told me that that does not exist, I can't get it, and a bunch of other apparent lies. They went so far as to get a RIM rep on the phone to "confirm" that Cingular does not offer a "public" WAP service like some other carriers. I finally insisted that they put the MediaNet "unlimited" plan on my account (an later found out it was not unlimited). They argued with me about the necessity and insisted that I would be paying $20 extra per month for nothing. Of course, teathering started working again immediately!

Now, what remains to be seen is if I am charged for use over the 5MB limit. They noted my problems on the account and ensured me that I could call to have any overages removed since I am on the BB UNL plan. In other words, I just spent a lot of time not answering your question. Sorry.

Please, someone correct me if I am wrong.

Cingular does not understand the word UNLIMITED and they often refer to it as "unlimted internet and email," which it is not. It is only unlimited apparently if you use the blackberry.net APN for Internet browsing using the Cingular browser. This does not allow truly unlimited use of the Internet connectivity features of the Blackberry device.

A bit off topic, but may be helpful to some: There are three browsers available on the 8700c:

Internet Browser: Available via public APN
Cingular Browser: Availabe to all with Cingular BB plans
Blackberry Browser: Internet use for BES users

The reason I discovered all of this through Cingular BB customer support is that originally my Internet Browser worked (see my saga above). I was stupid for calling and not leaving well enough alone. Then after all was said and done, only my Cingular Browser works (but teathering works, too). I suspected that MediaNet, Internet Browser and teathering used the WAP.cingular APN, so I put this in my TCP settings. I find it strange that my Internet browser worked before, but not now. There must be another peice to the puzzle.

I followed the directions in the initial post. Worked for me the first time. Thanks Barjohn.

Now if it could be used via Bluetooth, it would be perfect

Default 8700c EDGE modem worked for me.

FYI, I got the Cingular 8700 to work as an Edge modem with the following criteria:

Init string included "wap.cingular", not "proxy"
SIM is a blue-backed 3G Cingular Orange sim.
Desktop Software 4.1.

u/p: [email address] / CINGULAR1

I received a 736 error when I tried using my old non-3G SIM. After talking with our business care specialist, the new 3G SIMS work fine for 8700/modem/Orange capabilities. I thought she might be wrong... but she was right! I'm moving my phone number to one of the new 3G sims on monday to test it.

Not sure if this matters or not but I've got a Cingular GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA card (Sierra 860) and the configuration looks like this

I've tried everything in the FAQ and this stream, but am unable to get my 8700 to work as a modem. I've tried both the Cingular blue and orange.

I have logging on and have notice the following repeated in my log file:
12-16-2005 23:09:07.769 - After waiting 20ms CD is still low.

this line appears about 30 times in a row. i also see:

12-16-2005 23:09:29.801 - DSR is low while initializing the modem. Verify modem is turned on.
12-16-2005 23:09:29.801 - CTS is low while initializing modem.

Anyone know what this means? It does the registering on the network, etc. and then i get the ole 736 error.

The current settings on my 8700c are as follows:

APN: wap.cingular
Username for APN: [email address]
Password for APN: CINGUALR1

On my laptop the settings are:

Modem Properties:
Initialization String: +cgdcont=1,"IP","WAP.CINGULAR"

Dial-up Properties:
USERNAME: [email address]
PASSWORD: CINGULAR1

I keep getting error 736. What the heck am I doing wrong?

The password is CINGULAR1 (not CINGUALR1 as you have above).
Also make sure all compression, flow control, etc boxes are unchecked under modem configuration...

sorry for the poor typing. I actually entered the password as CINGULAR1. I have verified all boxes are unchecked. Still no luck. I will keep trying.
