1. Is the wifi logo grayed out or white?
2. Is this happening with all friends or that one? Could it be a problem on your friend's phone?

You will not be able to use PIN messaging or blackberry messenger (nor any blackberry/RIM applications that require data) without a blackberry data plan. And this is whether on wifi or the mobile network. You will not connect to the blackberry/RIM system.

Correct. You will have severe limitations without a plan. If you do not get a plan, you may want to consider another type of phone

I just answered your PM by the way.

You can use certain data connections when you are in hotspots. G-mail has a stand alone e-mail app which doesnt use BIS. However, it can only be loaded through your blackberry browser which is your challenge.

Wifi is helpful with data connections and battery efficiency.

Many carriers in USA will not activate your phone without a data plan.

Again, see what it will cost for an unlimited plan even if you have change carriers

O2 offer blackberry unlimited UK bolt-ons on their SIM only contracts.
