I have a used Verizon 8830 and have the following questions:

1. Does Verizon allow you to have a Blackberry and not sign up for a data plan?
2. If so, can I get email via BIS w/o a data plan?

I have bought a 8830 world edition and , after getting it unlocked from Verizon , i am using it with a GSM operator in India. Can anybody tell what all is possible ? i would like to check my gmail account frequently..
