end of OS updates for 9800 Torch?
Please Login to Remove!
With the launch of OS7 and the new Torch models, would I be correct in assuming that we have probably seen the last of the OS updates for our beloved 1st gen Torch? No more OS 6.0 updates? No more Beta releases? No more 6.1? It's very disappointing if that is in fact the picture going forward... I think I am done with New Blackberries until they get their shit together.... Maybe QNX will be the answer... maybe it wont?

The latter part of the aforementioned eventuality is a given.

Re: end of OS updates for 9800 Torch?
End of updates to 6? Of course not. I had a Pearl 8100 that I got in '07. The last update it got to OS 4.5 was issued in Jan. Of 2010, almost 3 years later and well after most of the other models moved on to OS 5.
No word on a real OS 6.1 for the "legacy" phones, but I can't believe they will ignore a user base locked into contracts and not at least give use some of the UI fixes of 7 that we've been complaining about since the day the original Torch was released. Issues addressed that RIM so proudly touted several months back when it was still called 6.1 and so obviously directed at existing OS 6 users.

That is exactly the question I was going to ask... Anyone have any reliable news about this? I though that RIM statement when OS7 was announced was that our 9800 would be eligible...
Another question : on the beta part of this forum ( http://www.blackberryforums.com/beta...-releases.html), it is written (since a very long time) that latest known beta version for 9800 is OS6.1... I have never, ever seen a OS6.1 (latest I've seen is OS6.0.0.600), so is this a mistake or a very well hidden OS???

Did you read the very first post of that thread ?

Well, yes I read the 1st post of the thread... The question is still : should we wait for a OS6.1 (or even a OS7) for our 9800??? Could we expect something more than the current OS6.0?
Strange enough, this is the only forum where OS6.1 is mentionned for the 9800 : nothing on BBleaks, crackberry, etc... Will it ever get out for us to check?

6.1 is 7. It was renamed.
The post you are referring to was before it was renamed.

Well now we know from NJBlackBerry that 6.1 is really 7. At the risk of incurring NJBlackBerry's (aka Grumpy) wrath, will we see OS 7 for the 9800?
Here in Canada the big three, Rogers, Bell and Telus require 3 year committments for the lowest price for new hardware (same price as US carriers charge for 2 year contract) so many of us have more than 2 years remaing on our contracts (The Torch 9800 did not come to Canada until Sept 30 2010). Also Rogers for one has quietly extended the time frame to be elegible for an upgrade for many of its best customers from 1 year to 26 months!!!
I will probably wait until 2012 for the new BlackBerrys running QNX. I read one article which said many software developers are holding off developing software for BlackBerry because of the many operating systems and various hardware formats.

Since writing the post above, I have answered my own question with a google search. Both Crackberry.com and the support forum on Blackberry.com say OS7 will not be coming to older devices. Apparently OS7 is written for new hardware which supports a compass etc, which only the new hardware can support. OS7 takes advantage of the new hardware. To the extent that OS7 has features that older hardware can support, I am sure we will see it in OS6.
As noted above, even very old hardware with very old OS's still receive OS updates. I think it highly improbable that OS 6 will not continue to evolve. I cannot see .600 as the last OS for the 9800.
I will still probably wait for the QNX devices, though.

Re: end of OS updates for 9800 Torch?
I didn't make up the OS 6.1/7 numbering. That is public knowledge.
OS 7 is only going to be available for devices that come with OS 7. This has been posted in several other threads.
You have several comments in your paragraph, but one one question that I can see.

This is apparently a decision by RIM to not allow the older devices like the 9800 to get the OS 7 features, rather than the hardware not supporting OS 7. There's been a beta release (6.1.0.62) of 6.1 (aka OS 7) for the 9800. That beta apparently came with abnormally stern warnings from RIM, as it doesn't appear to have been leaked although its months old now - despite the fact that most other betas seem to be leaked.

Re: end of OS updates for 9800 Torch?
Apparently. That is a strong a statement as we will hear about 6.1.
A leaked OS that was never leaked.
So they renamed it to OS 7. You don't know why and neither do people outside of RIM.

Fixed it for ya, since your statement made no sense.
And yeah, I don't know why for sure, never said I did - that's why I did use the word "apparently." Here's what we do know:
- A 6.1 OS beta exists for the 9800
- 6.1 was renamed to 7
- Therefore it follows that the 9800 is able to run 6.1/7 in some form
- That beta has never found its way into the wild - hasn't leaked
- RIM has now decided to not make OS 7 (the renamed 6.1) publicly available for the 9800
- None of us can authoritatively say why, we can just speculate
Happy with that?
Thanks for the lecture though.

The only misunderstanding on display is yours - of the meaning of the word "apparently." Glad I (apparently) got that cleared up for you.

NJBlackBerry sure is cranky. I had to laugh at your response, though. Much more diplomatic than I might have been.
I think you brought as much clarity to this we can at this stage.
