Arrow Can I remove and reinstall BES and not lose all my users?

Please Login to Remove!

It comes to light that the previous admin who installed BES in our office didn't follow the permissions requirements and now we have a number of oddball problems that can really only be resolved by removing and reinstalling BES. I'm wondering if there's a way to do this and still preserve all my enterprise activated Blackberries. It would be a major pain to recall all our users and get them to re-activate their devices. Maybe there's a way to backup that data?

It sounds like a long shot, but I figured I'd better ask. Thanks folks.

If it's just permissions issues then you should not need to re-install. What issues are you having?
As for the re-install, what version of BES are you running? If it's V4 have a look at http://www.blackberry.com/knowledgec...07683&vernum=5

I believe you should be able to reinstall BES so long as you don't make any modifications to the database while it's dow n.

Sorry, it's V4.
The specific issue we're having is that a BB created Calendar item will never sync up to the Exchange server. That and a few other little issues. BB KB says it's because of the permissions.

But then it is your BlackBerry service account in Exchange. No reason to reinstall your BES.
If it is in Exchange 2003, don't add the BlackBerry Service Account to the Full Admin group. Just give the account the rights as in the installation manual.

Bob

if it's just calendar issues, check your cdo.dll file, these need to be the same on the bes and exchange

I would think that if you exported all the information out of BES MGR, you could reinstall and then do an import of that info, you would be good to go.

I had to do this when I upgraded from BES 3.7 to 4.0, and it worked like a charm.

As long as you do not dump your database and your BES mailbox, you should be able to reinstall pretty safely. Here are some steps you may want to follow:

Make sure the BES Mailbox has the appropriate rights to the user's mailboxes(refer to BES install docs depending on version)
Make sure you have the same version of Exchange Admin/sys manager on the BES that you have on your Exchange box.
Ensure your CDO version on the BES is the same as on Exchange.
Give the BES Admin/Service account local admin rights on the server.

Once you ensure all of this is correct, you can uninstall the BES Software and reinstall on the server and point it to the correct database and admin mailbox. Once it is installed and services are started, your users will be back up and running, and everything will be as it was.
