You can use Password Keeper and set a password. That way, whoever finds your BB will have to enter the password 10 times incorrectly in order to wipe itr.

I don't think that Password Keeper is the right answer. Go To Option, Security Option, General Settings and set the Security Timeout. Even the maximum one hour will do the trick with minimum inconvenience to you.

And the more obvious answers is to call your provider and report it stolen or lost, once you do if anyone tries to activate it your provider should be able to accertain it is a "hot" unit and prevent its activation. If you are on a BES you can also report it to them and they can lock it from there.

I had a program for my Treo that allowed me to send a text message to my phone with certian text and it would wipe it out / lock it out once received. Is this available for the BB?

Not that I am aware off but what is the name of the program, maybe if enough people see it and write the manufacturer it might be made available for the BB.

last time i checked this was the blackberry forum. the guy asked a technical question. I simply found it amusing that everyone was implying that he stole it. he said he found it, and was seeing if it could be made to work. I answered the question.

So, take it to a Rogers place. Or call several people from the address list at random. Finding the owner should take less than 30 minutes tops, assuming that you want to find the owner.

I think the main reason everyone came down so hard on you is becuase you were asking a question if you could use it with your sim card..

If it was my blackberry and you returned it, I still wouln't be too pleased if you used it for a few hours or days..

Wrong! Drop it off at at a Rogers store and they will track the user by IMEI.

On the Home screen go to Options and then Security. If you have a newer BB then Security may be under Advanced Options or something like that. Change the Password option to Enabled and set a good password. Not something obvious like your phone number or other personal info. Next go down to the "Security Timeout" option and set this to something reasonable. Not too short or it will be a pain, but too long and it's next to useless. After that go down to "Lock Handheld Upon Holstering" option and set this to "Yes", which will make the BB lock itself whenever it's slid into a holster or pouch that has the magnet installed for the sleep mode.

That should cover things pretty well. If it falls out of your holster then it will come out locked. If you leave it sitting somewhere it will lock itself after the time set has passed and there has been no use.

Good to hear - but I must disagree - it is never the victim's fault. Sure he should have locked it up, and sure he was dumb enough not to secure a $500 device - but it was the sleazebag who stole it fault. Not the victims. It is that slippery slope of justifiable actions that degrades us all.

reporting it lost or stolen doesn't do anything on a gsm carrier. here in the states, gsm carriers do not maintain a list of stolen/lost imei's (outside the us is different). the only carriers that maintain this are iden(i think) and cdma carriers that block esn's.

maybe rim will permaban a pin, but that might be the extent of it.

Insurance? Pray tell...
I enjoy few things more than higher insurance premiums on anything, because "that's what it's for". As to a high horse, proud to be there...as to breaking the law, kindly speak for yourself.....
