Default 2 BES with Remote SQL database

Please Login to Remove!

ALL,
Hopefully you can help me with this. I am wanting to setup fault tolerance for blackberry. I have been authurized funds to 2 BES's, and 1 SQL server. I was hoping some of you could point me in a guide, or what not to setup this solution. We now run everything on one server, and is one point of failure. We are hoping to avoid the one point of failure issue. If there is any info you can provide me please help.

Thanks

Hallo SSgt Adams,
i'm running 2 W2K3 SP1 Server with BES 4.0.5 with Exchange W2K3 SP1 and remote SQL-DB. It works very good in this configuration with 320 Users.
The migration from MSDE to remote SQL is a little tricky, please search in these forum, there are good dokumentations inside.
The next step, install the second BES, is very easy, you only have to connect to the remote SQL-DB and give the second SRP-ID. Follow the Install-Wizard.
You should use the same serviceAccount for exchange (MAPI) for the second BES.
To access the SQL-DB i use a SQL-account with full rights, not windows trusted.
When you have the 2 BES installed, it's very helpfull for maintenance or upgrades, you can move all users to one BES and make your job at the other BES without downtime for any user.

Thanks a TON for the Info HH... Is there any advantage using a SQL-Account over windows trusted? Also... I was going to start with a Fresh copy of SQL, and pretty much start from the ground up, and hand jam all the users in..> i know all the users will have to synch or enterprise activate. What version of SQL would you recommend for this.. I have access to 2000 or 2003... my choice... And last question... I swear.... Do I need to manage different CALs for each BES... or will that be handled between them since it is a remote database???

Thanks again for all your info... it really helps.

No
  • advantage on using NT trausted over SQL or vice versa
  • I take it you mean SQL 2005 and not SQL 2003? SQL 2005 only works with BES 4.1 so if you're running 4.0 you will need to use SQL 2000
  • BES's that share a database are said to be in the same BES domain. BES's in the same
domain share their CAL's.

"I was going to start with a Fresh copy of SQL, and pretty much start from the ground up, and hand jam all the users "

Why do this. It is really staright forward to move your MSDE database in to SQL. This will mean a small bit of downtime for your users but they won't have to reactivate or anything.
