Ok, I am trying to use verizon's broadband access with pcAnywhere to access my home computer. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Most likely not, as you would need the client software installed on your handheld.

One VERY exciting development that I found yesterday was a functional RDP client for the BB!!!!

I can't believe that it actually works... It's amazing. The BB has been a fantastic tool for years, but one thing that has always annoyed me is having to take a laptop on short (2-3 day) business trips so that I can view word/excel/pdf and use RDP to access servers. Since the 8703e can view the doc/xls/pdf files, and I am now able to connect to my servers via RDP, I am in heaven. Now all I want is VPN support. Give me cisco VPN client support, or a browser capable of handling SSL VPN, and I'll get rid of my laptop completely!

Just re-read your post, and I'm confused now. Are you trying to use PCAnywhere from your handheld, or from a PC utilizing Broadband Access?

If you're trying to do it from the handheld, my answer stays the same, but if you are doing it from a pc tethered to your BB and are using Broadband Access, of course you can use PCAnywhere once you have established a network connection

I am using my blackberry as a tethered modem. I have installed pcanywhere and could not get it to work. I even did a inline chat with tech support and he said it was because I could not ping my home computer. Called verizon and they said they could not help me. I was hoping someone on here would be able to help, since most on here are way smarter that any tech support.

Well, they are (somewhat) correct in saying that it will not work because you can't ping your home machine...

Are you running a router/firewall? There is a decent chance that your router/firewall has icmp turned off, hence it does not return ping. Also, if you are running a router/firewall, with about 99% certainty, you are using NAT/PAT. What is the ip of your desktop at home? If it's 10.0.x.x, 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x you're NAT'd and have a non-routable private IP. If this is the case, you will have to configure your router/firewall to port forward the ports that PCAnywhere communicates on. I haven't used it in years, but the ports used to be 5631(tcp) and 5632(udp). You can find the correct ports here:

Once you have found the correct ports, you'll have to setup port forwarding on your firewall/router. For example, if the IP of your desktop is 192.168.1.50, you will have to config the firewall/router to forward all traffic sent on tcp 5631 to 192.168.1.50 on port 5631 tcp and also to send all udp 5632 > 192.168.1.50 on port 5632 udp.

Part of the reason your carrier can not help is because the problem is on your end (at home) and has nothing to do with your BB or the tethering svc.

dont forget some home routers block pings. so for trouble shooting purposes u might wanna enable ping.

By the way... If you are using Windows XP, I would suggest dumping PCAnywhere, and using the Remote Desktop functionality built into XP. That way, you have a remote client available to you on any XP machine that you may encounter while away from home, and you only have to deal with forwarding one port - tcp 3389.

You need xp pro and I have home edition.

BTW could not get paAnywhere working, so i gave up...

this link shows you howto setup port forwarding on a linksys... I'm about 85% certain that is your problem.

Your ISP (at home) provides you with a single public IP address. When you connect the router/firewall to your cable modem/dsl router the firewall/router assumes the public IP - for the sake of conversation we'll call it 1.2.3.4

With the router/firewall doing NAT, your inside interface will most likely be 192.168.1.1 (or 192.168.0.1, 10.0.0.1, 172.16.1.1)
That being said, all of the network devices connected inside of your firewall will follow the same addressing scheme. Assuming your router/firewall is 192.168.1.1, we'll assume that your PCAnywhere desktop is 192.168.1.100 (NM: 255.255.255.0 GW: 192.168.1.1)

If you follow the instructions in the link above to configure the proper ports to forward to 192.16.1.100, you should be golden. Of course PCAnywhere will need to be running and properly configured on the 192.168.1.100 machine for it to accept a connection.

Without port forwarding on, your attempts to connect from outside your firewall are being blocked since they are reaching 1.2.3.4, but it is not passing this information to the 192.168.1.100 machine sitting inside of your firewall. Port forwarding allows this communication.

If you'd like to PM me after you've made the changes with your public IP (the one assigned to the outside of your router -can be found by going here: What's My IP Address? Your IP is 66.228.120.18 ) I'd be happy to run a port scan on you to see if the ports have ben opened correctly. To find your PCAnywhere machine's IP, goto: Start>Run type in 'cmd' (without quotes) and in the window that appears type in 'ipconfig' (again, no quotes)
