Does anyone have any advice how to create much smaller files? Using the lavc decoder that is referenced in this thread, and used by default in mencoder without downloading other decoders, etc., it seems the least quality allowed (without error) is vbitrate=4 and abitrate=32, which still yield files approaching 100kbytes for just 5 seconds of video in my tests. The audio portion alone takes more than half of this at the abitrate=32 setting, and I have no idea how else to control the audio (sample rate, mono, etc.).

I've found other settings available for mencoder and the lavc decoder (e.g., "srate") and a plethora of other settings that make little or no difference. Trying to weed through the jungle of info out their on mplayer and mencoder is overwhelming.

So what's the trick? The files tinytube.net provides are in the order of 200 to 250 kbytes for up to two minute videos. Is there another set of decoders that would help? Any mencoder experts out there?

Thanks.

Default Error getting Codec

Hello everyone. I've converted a few videos but am not able to view them on my computer. I see an "error getting codec" when I attempt to play them with the Windows Media Player. Is this just a matter of me not having the codec on my system and if I send them to the BB they will work ok? Thanks.

I am downloading Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest from Cinema Now (It was a gift). The page I am downloading it from says Plays on: 1 PC.

Is it possible to convert this file to an AVI. The name of the file is

pirates_caribbean_deadmanchest_dl_mid_1200k.wmv

Thanks

While using command scripts can be very useful I understand it can be difficult for some people who are less knowledgable on using scripts. The good new is that there are easier solutions such as using 3GP Movie Wizard (Linux) or BlackBerry Video Generator (Windows). As an experienced Linux user I really like 3GP Movie Wizard due to it's easy to use, free and an open source project.

Hey everyone. I am finishing up a GUI for this process. Makes it pretty simple to convert at the default full screen for the pearl. I am planning on making options for all resolutions (I have noticed that "letterbox" movies are pretty weird on the pearl resolutions) and I need some things from you users here:

Resolutions that you would like to see as options in the GUI
Credits (I have already included MPlayer, Blackberryforums, and Zro)

I am posting the beta at

www.seabyrdtech.com - HTTP DownLoads

It should be up in a few minutes. I am going to write on this for the rest of the weekend, so if you have any suggestions get them to me before the weekend is over...

Thanks for everything, just trying to give back to these forums. You have totally saved my job (really) on more than one occasion.

Ok, it is posted. Please note that you will need to place my executable (advanced users) in the directory with mencoder.exe or else it will fail.

www.seabyrdtech.com - Blackberry Video Converter

I have also included a package of this executable with the mencoder.exe file and create an installer so that it will be easier for everyone to use (shortcuts, etc.).

I have included all the options mentioned in this thread. You can choose from 3 full screen videos and you can also choose to maintain the original file's aspect ratio.

The program allows you to choose if you want to use the LAVC codec and the original volume or to increase the volume using the LAME codec (this will increase the size by ab out 20%) but it can be MUCH louder.

The xxx8220;prompts added to confirm actionsxxx8221; can be a bit overkill for the savvy users but a very good idea for the not so savvy users.

You should mention that itxxx8217;s necessary to type in .avi in the description when you xxx8220;Save toxxx8221;

Nice work.

I am assuming you are using Linux. What distribution are you using? In a terminal type (as root):
"updatedb" then "locate libdvdcss" if it is installed you should see something like "/usr/lib/libdvdcss.so.2"

Default Automating the Mencoder Method

For those of you who are having difficulty figuring out how to 'try' the mencoder method I have automated the steps in an installation routine with simple instructions.

You can go to files.bippleniter.com for the installation script. (I'm too noob to post URL's) As with any executable you download from the internet you should scan it over and over until you are satisfied it is virus free. =)

The Mencoder method I'm using and have automated doesn't help 'easily' with DVD but makes it a drag/drop solution for most .wmv, .avi, and .vob files.

The mencoder settings that are in the batch files are the ones that work for me. Tweak to your liking in:
c:\program files\bbencode\encode.bat
Instructions (duplicated on website)
1. Run installer
2. Drag Video to ENCODE BLACKBERRY VIDEO icon on the desktop
3. After conversion completes; videos are located on your desktop in a folder labeled "BLACKBERRY VIDEOS"

Enjoy!

I will include DVD (non encrypted) support tonight (my boss frowns upon me coding for personal freewares on the company dime...). In the meantime, you can just point the file open dialoge to your dvd files, go into the video folder on the (D:, G:, whatever: ) drive and choose the .vob file you want to play on your blackberry.

The best way I have found to figure out which .vob file on the DVD is the movie, is to open it in Windows Explorer and choose the details view (View/Details) and look for the largest file. That is the one you should try first point.

I am going to try to figure out how to include the libdvdcss decoders in the full package. I probably wont figure that out until this weekend (unless someone wants to tell me which if any of those .dlls are the ones I need to include...)

Keep the feature requests and bug reports coming guys
