Isn't it actually gtalk? And it's a Jabber client to connect to Google and IM anyone with a GMail account.

Google Talk (proper name) is an instant messaging application similar to AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, and Windows Live Messenger. Google has opened it up to Jabber to allow you to communicate across the networks used by other IM clients. It has been a beta since the day it first came out for the desktop. I don't expect it to come out of beta until Gmail sometime after Gmail does.

I was under the impression that Google tends not to release a "final" version of their products but, rather, keeps them in a state of perpetual "beta" release with ongoing updates.

I expect that the Google Talk 1.x beta will end with the release of Google Talk 2.x (in beta).
