i heard 3g will be coming soon to usa. but isn't there already a fast network from tmobile evdo or cingular edge? how is 3g better than those 2? is it faster than the evdo or edge network? if so, how fast? so if anyone know, please englighten us. thx in advance.

I thought tmobile had edge and not evdo. Evdo is pretty fast I have not played with edge that much 2 compare.

Evdo is actually 3g. T-mobile and cingular both usw EDGE and sprint and verizom use evdo. The coming 3g network people are speaking of is UMTS. It should be about as fast as evdo, until a revision called HSDPA is added top the network. That's the holy grail of wireless data speeds.

Yes. You can have simultaneous voice and data with HSDPA. And speeds for the first revision are suposed to be around 700k

DEAR GOD...

It seems that soon Coax Cable modems will be a thing of the past, as well as DSL... Obviously due to bandwidth concerns we aren't real close to that, but we are sure moving in that direction.

By the end of 2007 you'll be able to get faster speeds tethered to your blackberry than you will with DSL. 8mb cable is still pretty darn fast though. I don't think I'll give that up.

What's the limiting factor in browser speed on the BB -- is it the connection speed or is it the processer/rendering speed of the device?

I wonder whether the device's speed in rendering pages for the BB screen places an upper limit on browsing speed such that EDGE, EVDO, and UMTS will all seem quite similar.

Has anyone spend a significant amount of time comparing the two with controls for outside factors (i.e., same websites, same signal strength)?

Youir probably right about browsing. You'll notice the speed difference when tethering, and possibly when downloading larger files.

Here is what I read about the different technologies:

GPRS / EDGE Internet : All the phones on ImportGSM have GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). GPRS allows a cell phone to transmit data, such as web pages, ringtones, graphics, games and more. If you've ever browsed the web on your phone, you've been using GPRS to do so- unless you have EDGE. EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) is just like GPRS, but 3 times faster. EDGE allows for data rates as high as 177.6 Kbps.

3G / UMTS : 3G, or UMTS, is a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, which takes cellular data transmission to a whole new level. Capable of sending and receiving at up to 2Mbps, UMTS is currently being used in Europe for 2 way video calls, streaming video, high speed internet and more. The USA will not see UMTS, but will be using HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology, which will allow for downloads as high as 14.4 Mbps (and 5.8 Mbps uplink).

• speeds of up to 2.4576 Mb/s with Rev. 0 and up to 3.1 Mb/s with Rev. A
EDGE

i just went to cingular and tmobile website and it seems...they both are using edge network. so my question is what carrier is using ev-do network then?

Cingular is deploying HSDPA; the network is live in some metro areas. Check its site for details. No BB, however, supports it.

Incidentally, Tmo will be deploying UMTS/HSDPA on its newly won 2100, whereas Cingular uses 1900, so a high-speed Tmo BB will not necessarily work on Cingular's network and vice versa.

i used to think these high-speed cell phone services would make cable internet obsolete, but in reality it wont happen. people forget about latencies, i dont care how fast your wireless connection is, it will never have as little overhead as a hard-line cable connection does. HSDPA will be absolutely awesome to have for your laptop, but its not something people are going to want to game on all the time...

i wish tmo would do something temporary to up the speeds of EDGE, or at least help the stability. i cannot stay active on my tethered laptop for more then a few minutes, it always freezes the connection forcing me to re-connect.
